The town of St-Hilaire-de-Riez is located on the Côte de Lumière (Atlantic Ocean).It is vast and its coast is 13 kilometres long with 85% sand and 15% rock. St-Hilaire-de-Riez is situated between Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Saint-Jean-de-Monts. The town of St-Hilaire-de-Riez is bordered along the coast with maritime pine trees, the Forest of Monts and much of it is covered with Breton and salt marshes. Museums look more like attraction parks in Vendée. Among them is the shipyards where some of the finest and most prestigious liners are built. These places are also worth visiting: the Saint Nazaire Shipyard, Airbus, Atlantic Port in Nantes St Nazaire, the big blockhaus in Batz sur Mer, Escal’Atlantic, Vendée Minature in Brétignolles sur Mer. The Vendée has some of the largest zoos of Europe including Sables d’Olonne and the Natur’Zoo in Mervent. Because the sea is everywhere in Vendée, there are many aquariums such as the Aquarium of Noirmoutier, the Aquarium le Septieme Continent (the Seventh Continent) in Talmont St Hilaire, the Aquarium of la Rochelle and the Océarium of Croisic in Loire Atlantique. The Vendée is a region with many inventive and imaginative attraction parks such as Feeling Forest in Saint Hilaire de Riez, Atlantic Toboggan in Saint Hilaire de Riez, Ouest Aventure (watersport park) in Sables d’Olonne. The history of the region is mainly from the medieval and renaissance era left a rich architectural heritage. Many castles, proof of a prestigious past, are worth visiting such as the Château of Apremont, the Château of Commequiers, the Château of la Guignardière in Moutier les Mauxfaits, the Château Terre-Neuve in Fontenay le Comte, the Château de Barbe Bleue in Tiffauges, the Logis (Estate) of la Chabotterie in St Sulpice le Verdon, Dungeon and Gardens in Bazoges, the Old Castle of l’Île d’Yeu, the Feudal Castle of Sigournais.
