Whatever style of camping holiday – cultural, active, culinary or cycling – you’re looking for, you’ll know you’re in the right place from the moment you arrive at Camping La Bâtisse. At five minutes’ drive from the bastide town of Réalmont in the Tarn region, the site has easy access to medieval fortified towns, nature walks and gastronomic adventures as well as being on the Albi-Castres Green Way.
Stretching along the Dadou River – where fishing is allowed – this peaceful, family-friendly spot has partially shaded grass pitches under a canopy of trees, with a launderette, accessible hot showers and washing-up area to take the sting out of everyday chores. Keep the kids happy with the playground, badminton and pétanque courts and a ping-pong table, and any dogs with you can be exercised in the leafy three-hectare grounds or surrounding fields and woods.
Catering-wise, you can practice your alfresco cooking skills on the communal barbecues, and sit at picnic tables overlooking the river to eat. There are supermarkets and artisan shops in Réalmont, and if you want a rest from cooking, you’ve a choice of bars and bistros there too. Anything else you need, just ask at reception.

Local attractions
Réalmont (five minutes’ drive) is an interesting place to start your exploration of the Tarn region. Built in medieval times as a fortified town, it still has its original grid of streets lined by half-timbered houses with brightly coloured shutters. If possible, visit on Wednesday to buy regional foie gras, truffles (in season) and cheese from the buzzing market in the central square.
Sitting on the Agoût River, Castres (25 minutes) is another medieval masterpiece; it’s on a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and has a clutch of spectacular religious buildings like Saint-Benoît Cathedral and its fine baroque interior to discover. River Tarn-side and UNESCO-listed Albi (also 25 minutes) is dominated by its mighty Gothic cathedral; the neighbouring Musée Toulouse-Lautrec has an excellent collection of posters and paintings by the notorious namesake artist.
Those of you who prefer your holidays to be purely rural can cycle or hike along the Albi-Castres Green Way, which follows a defunct railway line right past the site. There’s a gentle family walk up to the Croix de Caylou (half an hour on foot) for views over the Tarn Valley, and more easy strolls around Lac de la Bancalié (15 minutes’ drive).
