- Self-check-in site an hour’s drive from Tarbes, in the French Pyrenees
- Lake Payolle 10 minutes’ drive; Lourdes 50 minutes
- Dogs welcome; BMX track; fishing in La Gaoube river; vending machines
Technophobes might want to start familiarising themselves with all things automated now, ahead of staying at Camping Les IV Veziaux. This is because when you roll up to this site in the foothills of the French Pyrenees (that’s the Pic du Midi you can spy in the distance…), you might not find a human receptionist, but a self-check-in system. Don’t worry, though: it’s all very straightforward and self-explanatory.
Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (hence the need for a little technological help at reception), the site is an hour’s drive from Tarbes, in a valley carved by the rivers La Gaoube and Ruisseau de la Pradé, in whose waters you might catch a trout or two. Those who are not into fishing might fancy having a go at the on-site BMX track.
Dogs are welcome, and they can accompany you on energetic walks around Lake Payolle (10 minutes’ drive, or a half-hour walk) or along the trails of the forested Sarrat de la Gleizé ridge (five minutes’ drive). Other activities include mountain biking (by the way, the site has a bike wash station), mushroom picking and (in winter) dog sledding and snowshoeing.
In addition to spacious grassy pitches, the site has two modern amenity blocks (including one with facilities for guests with reduced mobility), a launderette with dryers, and vending machines for snacks and drinks. When it comes to mealtimes, though, chances are you’ll want to sample the delicious local fare, which you can do at several restaurants within about one kilometre of the site.

Local attractions
You don’t have to be religious to appreciate the profoundly spiritual vibe that hangs over Lourdes (50 minutes’ drive). Join pilgrims from all over the world at the Grotto of the Apparitions, where in 1858 the Virgin Mary appeared to a young local girl. There is also the Basilica of our Lady of the Rosary, covered with glittering Byzantine-style mosaics.
At the top of the Pic du Midi (55 minutes), which you can reach by cable car from the resort of La Mongie, is an astronomic observatory with a powerful telescope for some serious stargazing. Needless to say, the views from up there are beyond spectacular.
Tarbes (an hour) has a pretty city centre with tree-lined streets, monumental buildings like the Town Hall and several fountains. The Musée Massey, in a leafy park with a lake and a cloister, has a large collection of objects related to the Hussars, plus artworks by French, Italian and Flemish artists.
