It's free, quick and easy!
- Small, simple rural site with views overlooking the Aveyron hills
- Near Aubrac Regional Natural Park; five minutes' drive from Murols
- Direct access to a river, among fruit trees and with gardens to tend
Do dragons really roam in the area around La Forêt du Dragon? It’s unlikely… but if they did, you’d commend them on their choice – the rural Aveyron surrounds are highly scenic, and there are fruit trees all around the gardens of this small site (you’re welcome to lend a hand to tend them if you feel so inclined).
There's plenty of water around keeping this ground green and grassy, including a small stream that can be directly accessed from the site for paddling, swims and other water-based antics. Mightier rivers in the area include the Goul and the Truyère, and there are dozens of lakes in the nearby Aubrac Regional Natural Park too. (Oui, it’s all most pleasing on the eye for folk setting out to hike/bike their way through their holiday.)
This is a place that likes to keep things simple and natural, so it’s not stuffed with tons of facilities, but guests have access to toilets and showers, and there’s a small food shop with fresh produce for sale. For further stocking up, pick up bits in the village of Murols (five minutes’ drive) or seek out one of the supermarkets within a 20-minute drive.

Local attractions
Feeling a bit disappointed by the lack of dragons on site? Then your first port of call must surely be the Sentier de l’Imaginaire sculpture park in Murols (five minutes' drive), where a trail through the woods leads you to all sorts of weird and wonderful beasts created in metal and other arty materials.
You can also set off on a longer 15-kilometre hiking trail from Murols if you prefer, or take a wander among the deer and fawns at La Vallée des Daims animal park (half an hour). Getting out on horseback can be done from the riding stables half an hour away, while cooler times in/on/by the water beckon at Plage des Tours (35 minutes), which has a lakeside beach and watersports centre.
Fancy adding in a bit of heritage and culture? Take wanders around the ruins of Château de Valon (15 minutes), the village of Montsalvy (20 minutes) and the excellent contemporary ceramics collection at Galerie du Don (half an hour). Aurillac (45 minutes) is a good place to aim for if you’re in the mood for more urban strolls.
