Camping La Crèche: Rear entrance to the amenites block

General

  • Small peaceful site in a green Vosges valley
  • Hike directly from the site into the surrounding forests
  • Friendly and scenic site with restaurant, fishing and library

Crash out here for as long as you can possibly manage, for Camping La Crèche is an utter beaut.

Even the amenities are rightly pretty, set in a 100-year-old building and kept immaculate by the rightly friendly team. Elsewhere around, La Crèche has been lauded as 'fantastic', 'stunning, 'lovely' and 'not your usual campsite' by chuffed and former guests, with everything from the setting to the friendly vibe hailed as particularly praiseworthy.

La Crèche is a small and peaceful green Vosges valley site, in a woodland with a stream running through it for fishing or toe dipping. It's centred around a main house and its cosily cute outdoor seating area where you can mix with other guests and the amiable site hosts – as well as pay your friendly respects to the site goats and pigs. Hike from here straight into the surrounding forest, or just bag a book from the site library to find your own quiet reading spot.

Off site, La Crèche is a few minutes' drive from the town of Le Val-d'Ajol, within easy day trip distance of the Alsace Wine Route and close to spas, biking paths and summer flea markets. You can spark up campfires on site to cook over your own flames, but it's much recommended to trot along to La Crèche's restaurant too, for traditional and tasty eats indoors or on the roomy partially-covered patio.

Flexibility when asking for staying extra days and leaving earlyer due to weather. Very tranquil location with all the basic needs given. Very good camping for the person who likes to be in nature.

    Disliked:

Showers linked with watersystem for people who did the dishes which causes cold shower or no water in those moments, so time your showers well...

Fairly small and intimate site with good size pitches and good facilities for washing etc. Beautiful surroundings and friendly owners/other clientele.
The kids loved the camp animals - friendly dogs, two goats and two pigs.
The countryside is stunning with walks etc in the area and it is clear that many people return year after year.
On some evenings all the children played games together which were kindly put on bilingually to cater for English as well as Dutch speakers.
Campfire circle in main area and fires/stoves possible at pitches too.
Countryside location - can see the stars at night!
20 mins from Plombiere Le Bains. 90 mins from Belfort, Mulhouse, Colmar. About an hour from Gerardmer (stunning drive...) Even Europa-Park is possible as a day trip. Val d’Ajol with all necessary amenities is a ten minute drive.
Great selection of games in comfortable games room/library/music room (mainly Dutch but use your imagination).
Beers, shandy and ice cream available on an honesty system (write what you’ve taken and settle up at the end).
    Stream and woodland walks.

    Disliked:

This is added for information. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives!
Everyone was friendly and welcoming, but it is very apparent that the site caters predominantly for Dutch visitors. English visitors who are not comfortable with that would be better elsewhere (although English was spoken very well by pretty much everyone).
In very hot weather the campsite valley remains pleasantly cool and shaded - the downside is that evenings can be a little damp and cooler than it would be elsewhere - with the risk that tent/tarp may be slightly damp due to dew in the morning. On balance this is probably better and easier than being too hot.
Frites were available Saturday night but we’re not sure that there was a restaurant on site - at least no-one mentioned it to us and we saw no evidence of it. Probably should have asked...
The site is laid out in a linear fashion so some pitches are further from the facilities than others (that being said, the furthest pitch has its own campfire circle and would feel almost like wild camping with its privacy).

Local attractions

The Alsace Wine Route is a popular day trip in this green and peaceful region, with tours available about 40 minutes' drive away in La Forge.

By car, bike or motorbike, take a trip around the spectacular Route des Crètes, the viewsome 89-kilometre road from Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines to Cernay through the Ballon des Vosges Regional Nature Park. Its highest point is the famed Col du Grand Ballon at 1,343 metres, where the Tour de France has crossed several times: if you're up for tackling the col by pedal, start off from Saint Amarin just over an hour's drive away, for a ride upwards of 13 and a half kilometres.

Among the local spa towns are Plombieres-les-Bains, 20 minutes' drive away, and Luxeuil-les-Bains, within 30. Other local days out include wandering the restored fortified town of Belfort, or driving about an hour to the famed ski resort of Gerardmer and the neighbouring lakeside hikes and beach of Lac de Gérardmer, 50 minutes from the site.
