  • Peaceful 20-acre mountain site a short drive to Gérardmer's ski slopes
  • Two small ponds: one for trout fishing and another for swimming
  • Covered pool, bouncy castle, trampoline and sandpit; campfires allowed

A handy 20 minutes’ drive from Gérardmer in the Vosges region, and a lofty 730 metres above sea level, Camping La Steniole is set across 20 lush and leafy French acres and bordered by a peaceful and highly pleasant stream. Outdoorsy sports for all sorts are around the local area, such as water-based pursuits like canoeing, windsurfing, sailing and fishing in local lakes and, for braver souls, paragliding, bungee jumping and... yodelling. In winter, the site is handily placed for skiing among 40 kilometres of trails dispersed across 21 pistes around Gérardmer, as well as around the ski resorts of Xonrupt-Longemer and La Bresse, both an easy half an hour’s drive or less.

For those partial to à pêcher, the site has a small pond for kill-free trout fishing, and for those not so fond of fishing, another is on hand for simple swimming and splashing. If you’re keener on your water play to be among a tiled pool, a heated seasonal one on site is where you can head instead.

And on land, there's yet more... This peaceful family park also has a playground with a bouncy castle, slide, swings, a climbing rope and a sandpit, as well as a football pitch and tennis, volleyball and pétanque courts for games involving spheres of all sorts of sizes; a TV room is also at guests’ disposal should offspring at any point find they need a French cartoon fix. For more relaxing spells, there's plenty of space around the pool’s solarium to loll around on, and oceans of room around the grounds for pleasant ambles or, in the case of lively littlies, runs and squeals.

Eats are amply covered too, as in high season La Steniole’s restaurant serves quick and tasty pizzas cooked expertly in its very own a woodfired oven. Also splendidly, as befits a rural mountain site such as this, barbecues and campfires are allowed, so be sure to snag yourself a few top-notch saucissons from the local town’s tiptop butcher’s shop to sizzle up back at base, and stock up on marshmallows to melt while you’re in town too.

Pitches, say previous guests, are pleasantly shaded and well spaced out, and the showers and toilets spotless.

Great location, space, very friendly and helpful staff. Well spaced out pitches, good facilities and the possibility of lighting fires always works well with young boys.

Local attractions

In winter, the local area transforms into a paradise for ski and snowsporty pursuits, with the 40 kilometres of pine-filled trails across 21 connected pistes – including the longest one Vosges (a whopping 3,200 metres) – of Gérardmer within 20 minutes’ drive. Head here for scenic skis through kilometres upon kilometres of forest tracks that look out over the valleys and provide smashing views of the massif and of Longemer lake; more of the same will be found at the site’s two other resorts of Xonrupt-Longemer and La Bresse, both around 30 minutes or less by car.

To thoroughly amuse tiddlers, a visit to Ecoparc Junior half an hour’s drive away should be high up on the list of things to get stuck into: wilderness games and ecology awareness trails are set across two hectares along the banks of the Cleurie river, as well as a nature walk broken up by suspended rope bridges, tunnels and nets to further amps up the family fun. Also within easy reach is the Fraispertuis City theme park at Jeanménil, about 40 minutes’ pootle away.

For something water-based, head to the lakes of Gérardmer and Longemer, both south of the site: whatever your fancy – from sailing, kayaking and windsurfing to swimming, fishing and boating – are easily reached from the site by car, or should you want to take things especially easy, then head to the thermal springs in Vittel, Plombières, Contrexéville and Bains les Bains, all an hour-and-15 minutes’ drive or less.
