Anyone in search of a marvellous Creuse break should certainly mull over the idea of a stay at Moulin des Forges. Why so? Well, for starters, have a closer look at the scenery: woodlands, streams and lakes (yes, lakes plural) make up the bulk of this four-acre spot, with a smattering of restored stone buildings thrown in for good measure. It wouldn't be fair to focus only on the backdrop, though, as owners Colin and Christina have pitched in to sort an array of on-site leisure facilities: there's a heated outdoor pool here, plus a fully equipped games room with wifi access, a snooker table, darts, a games console, DVDs and books. Un petit tour à bicyclette could also be in the pipeline, with two-wheelers available to hire on site for those who haven't brought their own along. Paddleboards are also available for an extra charge if you want to admire the site's watery spots from every conceivable angle. Strong all-round facilities are another thing that'll keep you sweet at Moulin des Forges: there's a shared kitchen with plenty of space for food prep, plus a washing machine, toilets and hot showers. Barbecues are allowed here; with a bit of clever timing you can combine self-grilled bites with fresh bread straight from a local boulangerie that delivers on Tuesday and Friday mornings. The village of Moutier-Malcard is about two kilometres away and has a post office and bar. Aigurande (15 minutes' drive) is home to the closest large supermarket.

Liked The site was just idyllic, only stayed for a night but wish I had arranged our touring arrangement so we could have stayed longer..the facility's and things to do looked great.

Well, here you have quite a bit to keep history boffins busy: Sarzay (30 minutes' drive) has a rather fine 14th-century specimen that's worth exploring, while Meillant (an hour and 10 minutes) has an impressively regal estate still inhabited by a marquis.
