  • Waterfront restaurant and bar; grocery store and communal barbecues
The motto of the owners at Village Nature Le Maury is ‘living well and being in nature’. And when you go to stay there, you too can do just that. Set in a forest overlooking Lac de la Triouzoune at Liginiac in Haute Corrèze, this little natural haven will seem as far away from the stress of everyday life as it’s possible to be. Tucked under the tree canopy, the pitches are all spacious, clearly marked and nicely set apart for peace and privacy. The site offers all the comforts and amenities you should need for a relaxed and effortless outdoor stay, like sheet and towel hire, use of a fridge freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer and hairdryers. You can be as active as you wish on pétanque, tennis and badminton courts, and let the kids run around on the play area. There are opportunities for wild swimming in the lake, walks around the shoreline, fishing and practising yoga. Alternatively, you can simply head for the beach and read a novel borrowed from the book box. Your choice. As far as food and drink goes, there’s a breakfast pastry service and the informal Le Maury restaurant opens May to September and has a covered terrace with lake views. Meanwhile Le Petit Canada bar (open July and August) serves cool drinks under the shade of trees by the lake. For those going down the self-catering line, there’s a grocery shop for stocking up on essentials as well as barbecues for general use. You can also pick up provisions in sleepy Liginiac (10 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Guests praised the lovely owner and hard-working waitresses, as well as the nice setting and clean, tidy chalets. However, one reviewer reported a negative experience with a barman who was perceived as deliberately awkward and unwelcoming towards English guests. Local attractions

If you ever feel like leaving the peace of this leafy spot, fairytale Château de Val (40 minutes’ drive) rewards your effort with a setting surrounded by Lac de Bort-les-Orgues. The castle is open for tours of vast halls filled with Gothic furniture, the towers and a covered walkway around the ramparts. Another local landmark is medieval Château de Ventadour (35 minutes), a hilltop ruin and host to medieval fairs and falconry displays in summer. Walkers can hike sections of the looped Itinérêve, a hiking trail that runs through the Dordogne river canyon and passes right by the site. If you prefer to do your exploring under pedal power, cycle up to the Belvédère de Gratte Bruyère (40 minutes by bike) for truly spectacular views over a meander in the Dordogne. There’s more natural beauty to be admired at Bort-les-Orgues (half an hour’ drive) village, backed by the massive basalt columns of the Orgues de Bort – they are around 15 million years old. It’s also a watersports hub where you can try your hand at anything from sailing to jetskiing and wakeboarding.
