  • Family-friendly site within the Forêt de Montard, in central France
  • Arboretum de Chamberet 20 minutes’ drive; Limoges 35 minutes
  • Access to a swimming lake and a beach with a playground; dogs welcome
How does a spot of forest bathing sound for your next holiday? Imagine your worries and stresses fading away as you plunge yourself within the rejuvenating embrace of spectacularly lush woodland… Well, the good news is that you don’t have to imagine: all that can be yours at peaceful Camping Montard. This site (easily accessed from the D20 road) occupies the lower western slopes of the Forêt de Montard, in the Corrèze department of central France. And do you know who else rejoices among these green surroundings? Your canine companion, who will likely be only too happy to follow you on an exploration of the hills. After bathing in the forest, you might well fancy bathing in the waters of the nearby lake, the Plan d’eau des Forges (less than five minutes’ walk). Besides swimming (which is supervised in the afternoons in July and August), the lake area has floating inflatable structures, plus paddleboards and pedal boats for rent. Child-friendly entertainment on shore includes a playground, a miniature golf course and pétanque courts. Back on site after an activity-filled day, you can freshen up for the evening in the well-maintained toilet block (with hot-water showers) and throw any laundry in the washing machine. Then it’s all about sourcing food, which you can do easily enough at the on-site restaurant. Owners René and Floortje also run a daily bread service (July–August), though should you forget to pre-order your baguette in the evening, there’s a bakery (and a small store) in the village of Masseret (five minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This wooded campsite by a lake offers spacious, clean pitches with electric and water. Visitors praised the friendly owners, good WiFi, and hot showers. The lake area, though separately owned, provides swimming and activities. Some noted limited food choices, potential issues with tree roots affecting accessibility, and the need for clearer pitch boundaries. A manager's comment indicated planned improvements for disabled toilet facilities, and clarified that a washing machine is available in reception.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Vriendelijke eigenaren, heerlijk gegeten.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Lovely location with a lake opposite.. we swam in the lake and it was great...the lake has a restaurant and bar and floating bouncy castle inflatable type things and pedalos...this is separate from the campsite but free to use...the washblocks were clean..pleasant owners very helpful...they serve pizzas too...

Disliked The pitches couldbs a bit more defined with boundaries..they could also do with levelling out with some grit or stones but apart from that I would return again

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Lovely campsite alongside a beautiful lake (seperate ownership) Friendly hosts and a nice little area to get drinks and pizzas.
Great sized pitches with electric and water, nice showers with plenty of hot water and an area with a small freezer to be able to refreeze ice blocks etc.
Lovely walk for the dog in the wooded area off the lake although dogs are not allowed inside the actuall lake area but in a space at the far end (which we were told had only just been allowed a few days previous and as said before is a seperate business to the campsite)

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Friendly hosts, lake location, clean hot showers. Great WiFi reasonable prices and a lake to swim in.

Disliked Lots of flies, but it was red hot in the trees by a lake, so pretty normal.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Nice size pitches with electric hook-up and water. Not very busy when we were there so quiet at night. Free wi-if fast enough for streaming. The shower block was clean with hot water and toilet paper. Lovely spot near the lake and the woods backing onto the campsite. Friendly and helpful owners…thank you!

Liked Beautifully situated site in a wooded area next to a lake. Friendly helpful owners. Good clean sanitation block. Lots if thoughtful extra details.

Disliked No washing machines.

From the manager: HI,
great to hear you had a good time and that you were happy with the campsite.
You couldn.t find the washing machine, it is located in the reception area.
So there is a washing machine.

Local attractions

The Arboretum de Chamberet (20 minutes’ drive), within the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin, has self-guided botanical trails and workshops, including some on how to make cider (from the dozens of apple varieties that grow on site) and wooden clogs. There is also a wildlife garden and a deer park. Limoges (35 minutes) is renowned for its porcelain, and you can view some exquisite pieces – from delicate vases to extravagantly decorated clocks – at the Musée national Adrien Dubouché. After your visit, grab something to eat (and stock up on edible souvenirs) at the Halles centrales. Brive-la-Gaillarde (40 minutes) spreads out from the Collégiale Saint-Martin, a Romanesque cathedral with an interior of imposing stone pillars. In the summer months, the surrounding streets are hung with colourful umbrellas that make a pretty background for a selfie. Displays at the Labenche Museum of Art and History span from the prehistory of the region to the Nazi era.
