Views of a river valley

  • Peaceful accommodation in a forest with views of the Dordogne Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Argentat-sur-Dordogne and watersports centres
  • Access to a hiking trail; packed lunches with local products available
Wake up to a view of the Dordogne Valley at Hêtre Sous le Charme, a peaceful site in a forest five minutes’ drive away from the river itself. This should really help you to get a sense for just how quiet it is here: the accommodation is a five- to 10-minute walk through the trees from the parking lot, so you’re properly tucked away in the trees. In keeping with the forest setting, there are plenty of hiking trails for guests to trot along in the local area, including a trail that passes directly by the accommodation. Those river valley views, as well as being excellent to look at all times of the day, might also prompt you to think about getting out on the water yourself… Watersports centres are 10 minutes' drive away in Argentat-sur-Dordogne, a large, historic town on the Dordogne. The town is packed to the brim with lovely, local restaurants, supermarkets and shops, but try not to get too distracted by drinks along the riverfront. It's very likely that you won't want to run out of time for a gabares trip; these traditional flat-bottomed boats used to transport timber all the way to Bordeaux, but now carry tourists along the spectacular river valley. There are several castles and pretty villages within a short drive of Hêtre Sous le Charme – this is the Dordogne Valley, after all – and the Lac de Feyt swimming lake is also handily around 25 minutes’ drive away. Hêtre Sous le Charme will even sort out your packed lunch if you ask. The lunch is made up of delicious local (and mostly organic) products.

Local attractions

The Dordogne Valley has lots of small, pretty villages and towns to drive around. Southeast of the site is Tours de Merle (35 minutes’ drive), which is not quite on the Dordogne itself but overlooks the Maronne river tributary. The 12th-century citadel, set on a 30-metre cliff surrounded by oak forests, is a spectacular sight, and through the summer, it also hosts medieval demonstrations. While you’re in the area, you might as well take a look at Tours de Carbonnières (35 minutes), two dramatic ruined towers from a fortress built from the 11th to 14th centuries; a 40-minute hike is required. If you fancy some more walking, head in the complete opposite direction to the waterfall trails at Grande Cascade de Murel (25 minutes). If you have the equipment and experience, it’s also worth noting that the site is very close to Via Ferrata Dordogne (five minutes), a stunning route along the river valley. That’s sure to get the blood pumping.
