If you have trouble picking between mountains and sea, this Pyrenean site will tick all boxes. The 12th-century castle nearby and the mighty peaks further behind beckon visitors to explore this richly varied corner of France’s Pyrénées-Orientales region; meanwhile, the excellent facilities on site mean you'll likely want to stay at base for quite some time too. Camping des Albères is a peaceful tree-lined site, set among palm trees and greenery, and well maintained all around from its accommodation areas to its paths. Have a look at the pics to see how pretty this place is, and how vast the range of leisure facilities: there are indoor and outdoor waterparks to keep you all busy for at least the first few days… A grocery store and bread corner make the daily shop a doddle and the menu at the bar awaits if you can't be faffed with any slicing or chopping. While you're prepping (or ordering) eats, direct your smaller guests to the games room and playground, or set them off to explore the green grounds of the park. The village of Laroque-des-Albères is a five-minute stroll away or you can hire bikes at the site to explore the castle and beyond. Supermarkets are 15 minutes' drive away in Argelès-sur-Mer.

Liked Masificado y sin servicios mínimos. Es un camping muy extenso en una zona boscosa bonita. Los protagonistas son las casas móviles aunque hay alguna parcela. A nosotros nos dieron parcela de difícil acceso. El coche no podía entrar en la parcela y tenía que quedarse en un aparcamiento cercano. Los servicios muy lejos y sin papel higiénico. No hay contenedores de basura en todo el camping. La piscina masificada. En la web aparece mucha insistencia en no llevar otro bañador que no sea el de licra pero luego no se hace caso y se incumplen medidas más higiénicas como pelo suelto, ducharse antes de entrar…. No nos gustó demasiado.

Local attractions

As the name suggests, the sea is at Argelès-sur-Mer… along with wide beaches safe for bathing. This buzzing French resort is a popular spot for watersports and the gentler pastime of people watching in the seafront cafés. The old fishing village of Collioure (20 minutes’ drive) is a different kind of coast altogether: the salmon-pink town with its hilltop château and seafront fort is undeniably popular (blame Matisse and his crowd) but it still comes with a peaceful vibe for visitors to contemplate the coast. Equally quiet and inviting are the residents of Vallée des Tortues (five minutes from the site), a small, family-friendly nature park occupied by tortoises and turtles from all over the world. Nature on a grander scale can be encountered in the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées-Catalan (Prades is the closest entry point, an hour’s drive away): this wild and diverse landscape of mountains and lakes is teeming with birds and insects and laced with trails for hiking, biking and horse riding. A shorter drive of half an hour leads to Pic de Néolous, where a gentle and wheelchair-friendly path takes visitors past smugglers’ routes, waterfalls and bandit trails to a splendid mountain view. There's a bar, toilet facilities and picnic tables here too: every box ticked, again…
