Fancy a Swiss Family Robinson-style stay among a mature 67-acre private woodland in Normandy? Sorted. In the centre of Upper Normandy, about 20 minutes' drive from Rouen and two hours from Paris, Les Cabanes de Fontaine-Châtel is in a forested setting within easy reach of the department's 1,400 kilometres of walking and cycling trails. Accommodation here is in comfy, eco-friendly treehouses set between two and 12 metres off the ground, each with stunning canopy views and individually designed to fit the trees supporting it. The treehouses are all totally off-grid, with no water or electricity, but the owners have added dry toilets in the treehouses, and there are showers and additional toilets available at all times at the entrance to the estate, so that you don't have to forego creature comforts. To preserve the peaceful vibe, the treehouses are a five- to 20-minute walk from the reception. And while some huts are accessible via (more or less) easy trails designed for families or guests who are scared of heights, some must be reached by suspension bridges and zipwires. This is a family-run site run by the couple Louis and Juliette, who have created a protected habitat for local wildlife and added an educational farm; a friendly welcome is expected from their two dogs, Tartine and Roxy. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as deer, squirrels and birds from your treehouse terrace or the on-site forest trails. Each treehouse has a small oil stove to add heating for cool winter nights. Towels and sheets are not provided, but can be rented directly from the site. A gourmet breakfast is included when you book a stay here: simply hoist up your hamper when it's delivered in the morning. Hot dinners with regional dishes can be booked with at least seven days' notice.

Liked Het avontuur van het slapen in een echte boomhut, zo'n 10 meter boven de grond. We vonden het geweldig! Helemaal back to basic.
Je krijgt alle spullen mee, zoals hoofdlamp, lantaarntje, lucifers voor de kaarsen. Goed geregeld. Aardige gastvrouw!
Inde ochtend hangt er een ontbijt voor je klaar die je omhoog kan takelen. Heerlijk!

Liked Beautiful setting and comfortable cabins. Our son (11) loved the adventure of being in a tree. Hosts were amazingly friendly and answered any queries or questions we had. Breakfast was good and coffee hot, we had drinking chocolate as an option for the kids. Showers in the office block had hot water, although it was a bit of a trek for us to get to them. We had our own camping equipment for cooking and it was fun to cook out under the treehouse and take food up onto the platforms, we were also supplied with a BBQ and plenty of charcoal

Disliked Toilet facilities were very basic, but understandably so considering we were up a tree.

Liked Absolutely everything. The welcome was great and everything was explained well to us. The Forrest is amazing but the tree house, well what can I say? It was stunning! We also got a lovely breakfast hoisted up to us. Love it and will definitely go back.

Drakkar treehouse

Liked This was a beautiful way to end our holiday. My daughter loved the experience of sleeping in a tree house. Breakfast coming up with a rope was a real highlight. It creaked at night, but felt completely safe and it was all part of the experience - as was the eco-toilet!

There's plenty of outdoorsy stuff to do around here: test your steel among high ropes courses, ziplines and Tarzan swings of the big tree climbing park in Préaux, within 20 minutes' drive, or try a trip on horseback from one of two riding centres over in Mauquenchy. For water-themed activity, the sands and sea of Dieppe are less than an hour away and several pools are within 20 minutes' drive. Over 1,400 kilometres of trails network the Seine-Maritime department, and the site owners highly recommend the Avenue Verte, a former railway line between Dieppe and Paris transformed into a path for non-motorised vehicles. Bring a bike or take a simple stroll; car parks and picnic areas have been set up along the route for breaks and feeds. For something to keep the boys and girls on their best behaviour, the fairytale-themed family attractions, petting zoo and sky-high rides of Parc du Bocasse theme park are around 25 minutes' drive from Fontaine, and animals such as cranes, flamingos, monkeys, kangaroos and wallabies are over to see in Clères's zoo.
