Settle in for what’s likely to be a very peaceful time at Scierie des Lacs, on the edge of the tiny village of Menétrux-en-Joux in the Jura region. This spacious five-acre wooded park is in a quiet and green location that’s well placed for exploring the area – for starters, it’s just 45 minutes’ walk from the tall Hérisson waterfalls and 15 minutes’ drive from Lac de Chalain. And those are just two of the region’s stunning sights. Several viewpoints are within a short drive of the site, including the Four Lakes viewpoint overlooking forested slopes and shimmering turquoise waters. Tick off Saut Girad waterfall, 10 minutes’ drive away, too and take your pick from activities like hiking, swimming, canoeing, paddleboarding, mountain biking and fishing in the surrounding lakes and hills. Characterful villages are in good supply around this area too, as are family-run restaurants, shops selling local produce and dairies producing Comté cheese. On site, things are just as splendid. The kids should like getting to know the animals at the mini farm before settling in for dinner cooked at the dedicated barbecue area. A playground and pétanque court add yet more things to do, while dry toilets and a water fountain cover the practicalities (please note this site does not have showers). You’re welcome to pick your own pitch, choosing a sunny or shaded spot as you wish.

Liked Heel aangename ontvangst en een rustige sfeer. Fijn om tussen de dieren te verblijven in toch een rustige omgeving. De locatie is ook heel goed, vlak bij de cascades de hérisson en verschillende meren waar je kan zwemmen.

Disliked Spijtig dat er geen douches zijn, maar er is wel drinkbaar water aanwezig waarmee je je wat kan opfrissen.

Liked Les propriétaires sont très sympathiques et accueillants.
L’endroit est top pour se poser lors d’un bivouac dans le Jura. Et les tarifs sont imbattables.
C’est propre et plutôt grand.
Et c’est tellement agréable de regarder tous les animaux de la ferme.

Disliked Étant en bivouac dans le Jura j’aurais apprécié un accès à des douches mais ce n’est vraiment pas grave

Local attractions

If you like your scenery somewhat watery, you’ll be pretty pleased with your options nearby. The Hérisson waterfalls (45 minutes’ walk), cascading down 65 metres, make a good place to start – there are several hiking trails here, to give you splendid views from all angles. After that, maybe it’s on to Belvédère des 4 Lacs (15 minutes’ drive) for wonderful views across four lakes before heading to Lac de Narlay (15 minutes) for fishing or Lac de Chalain (15 minutes) for a walk followed by a dip from one of the supervised swimming areas. Back on dry land there are more excellent hikes at Pic de l’Aigle and treetop trails at Doucier Aventure (both 10 minutes). You can also travel a little further to Lons-le-Saunier (40 minutes), to stroll through the historic arcades, soak in the thermal baths and visit La Maison De La Vache Qui Rit, a museum dedicated to the much-loved cheese.
