  • Small, well-equipped site on the banks of the Briare Canal by Lock 21
  • Montargis and Château de la Bussiere within a half-hour drive
  • Next to the V3 véloroute; café/bar and kitchen on site
Picture yourself sitting by the canal, drink in hand, simply watching the boats go by and seeing what wildlife you can spot… now, doesn’t that sound like a fabulous holiday situation? This is the sort of thing that can be on the schedule for guests at Maine-et-Loire site Ecluse 21 Camping, right next to Lock 21 on the Briare Canal. Hotel boats pass here regularly, and wilder sights often include herons, cormorants, otters, deer and wild boar. That means there’s always something to look at when you’re relaxing on your canalside pitch or enjoying an afternoon of fishing. It’s a handy spot for cyclists, too, as the V3 véloroute passes just by the site, and there are facilities for charging electric bikes should you need them. Whether you’ve done a hard day’s cycling or a more relaxed day of wildlife-spotting, you’ll be able to use the hot showers and cook dinner using the kitchen area or lighting your barbecue. The on-site café serves various drinks including beers and local ciders, as well as breakfasts (for pre-order), packed lunches and freshly baked cakes and pastries. When you’re not hanging out on site there are plenty of places to get out and see nearby – the Loire Valley is packed with lovely châteaux to visit, as well as pretty towns like Montargis and Briare. There’s a supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away in Châtillon-Coligny, but if you really fancy a taste of the local area, see if you can time your trip to hit the Friday market.

Local attractions

For more sights along the canal, you can walk to Rogny in about an hour to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site Les Sept Ecluses, or head to Montargis (half an hour’s drive) to walk around the town known as ‘the Venice of France’ for its network of canals and rivers. And of course the River Loire is close by too, with pretty towns like Briare (25 minutes), canoe trips and clusters of wineries to visit. There are plenty of châteaux to visit, too – a couple of favourites are the 12th-century Château de Saint-Fargeau (half an hour) and the grand Château de la Bussiere (15 minutes). The petting area at La Ferme du Château (25 minutes) might be more your style if you’ve got small kids with you. If you don’t mind a bit of a longer drive, a day trip to Orléans (an hour and 15 minutes) can be on the cards. The cathedral (bearing more than a passing resemblance to Notre-Dame in Paris) is a must-see and there are a couple of great museums too, but there’s also much enjoyment to be had just strolling through the historic streets.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked Le cadre Idyllique
