  • Heated pools with waterslides; family entertainment and snack bar
Looking for a family-friendly base for exploring the Loire Valley – the ‘Garden of France’? At five minutes’ drive from rural Sonzay in Indre-et-Loire, Camping Paradis L’Arada Parc could well be just the place for you. This peaceful, eco-friendly retreat is also within easy striking distance of Tours, the famed châteaux of the Loire and Zoo de la Flèche, one of the best-known zoos in France, so you’re never going to be short of things to do. When you’re not gallivanting off exploring the Loire, you will have masses to do on site. Take a dip in the heated indoor (open in all seasons) or outdoor pools and whizz down the watersides, or challenge the kids to ball games on the sports courts. There’s a games room for your older offspring, and high season brings kids’ clubs and family activities like archery and exercise classes to the site as well – and of course, any adults needing a moment to themselves can sneak off to the wellness area for a bit of TLC. Stopping by the poolside snack bar is a must for relaxing meals with the kids (and a rather-more ‘grown-up’ tasting of local wines); you can also order breakfast bread and pastries ahead of time, and hire barbecues for alfresco feasting.

Local attractions

Castle-baggers won’t know where to start with the gorgeous confections in the Loire Valley. How about the Renaissance masterpiece that is Château d’Azay-le-Rideau (40 minutes’ drive) for its sublime setting on an island in the river? Château de Villandry (35 minutes) has ever-changing art exhibitions and manicured formal gardens, while waterside Château de Langeais (half an hour) is open for tours of its priceless frescoes and tapestries. The historic city of Tours (35 minutes) also makes a great day out for the half-timbered houses in its medieval heart and the glittering stained-glass windows in its cathedral. If the kids are tired of looking at ‘old’ stuff, they’ll perk up on a trip to Zoo de la Flèche (40 minutes), famed for its keeper talks, endangered gorillas, red pandas and tigers. If they don’t quite get their quota of animals there, they can catch up with pandas and hippos at ZooParc du Beauval (an hour and 10 minutes), where there are also sea lion shows and raptor displays. With gentle waterslides and bouncy castles, Lulu Parc (35 minutes) is best-suited to younger kids, and Kizou Aventures (20 minutes) has an indoor soft-play centre for toddlers. For more adrenaline-filled activity, look to Parc de Loisirs de l’Escotais (15 minutes), where you can all race go-karts around the track.
