- Family-friendly site on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Quiberon Bay
- Domaine de Suscinio 10 minutes’ drive; Vannes half an hour
- Playground; bike hire; several beaches within a 20-minute bike ride
With its rugged coastline and sheltered beaches, the Rhuys Peninsula, in north-western France, is a top spot from where to explore the rest of Brittany. And within this strip of land, about halfway between the beaches of Quiberon Bay and the Gulf of Morbihan (10 minutes’ drive to either) is Camping à la Ferme du Menguen.
This peaceful site on a farm with more than 200 sheep (you can count them if you have trouble sleeping at night…) has shaded grass pitches with water and electricity hook-ups. While the children explore the playground (with spring rockers and a ping-pong table), grown-up guests mingle on the covered terrace or busy themselves preparing family meals in the communal area (which is equipped with a refrigerator, freezer and microwave, plus washing machines).
There are a couple of supermarkets off the D780 road, but you might as well head into Sarzeau (10 minutes), where independent bakeries and cheesemongers, plus a daily morning market, can set you up with all you need for an excellent picnic. And if even assembling a picnic sounds like too much work, Sarzeau has a good range of bistros and crêperies.
As for recreation, there’s the GR34 coastal path, which you can tackle on foot or on two wheels (bikes are available to hire on site), reaching beaches like tiny, sandy Poulgor (15 minutes by bike); Roaliguen (15 minutes), a sunset-viewing hub; or Suscinio (25 minutes), with a nearby bird sanctuary. If you are into water-based action, sports centres in Roaliguen and Penvins (15 minutes’ drive) rent out paddleboards and kayaks.

Local attractions
The former residence of the Dukes of Brittany, Domaine de Suscinio (10 minutes’ drive) is a gorgeous castle with plenty of family-friendly activities, including boat trips in the moat, archaeology days and a spectacular sound-and-light show inspired by the legend of King Arthur. Near the castle are the marshes of Suscinio, inhabited by spoonbills, swans and storks.
Activities at Celt’Aventures (15 minutes) include treetop walks (with ziplines), trampoline-based bungee jumping and panning for gems in the River of Treasures. There’s also a large playground with climbing structures and miniature golf, plus a mini farm.
Vannes (half an hour) is renowned for its half-timbered buildings, Gothic cathedral and centuries-old fortifications. Between the ramparts and the river La Marle is an impeccably manicured French-style garden with cherry blossoms in the spring and colourful flowers in the summer.
