  • Grass pitches at a family-friendly site a short walk from Châteaugiron
  • La Roche aux Fées 20 minutes’ drive; Rennes half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; next to a fishing pond; cycle hire on site
There’s more to Brittany than its (admittedly spectacular) rugged coastline. Those who wander inland can expect to find ancient forests, prehistoric sites and splendid castles… and all of those are within easy driving distance of Camping Les Grands Bosquets. This site with well-maintained grass pitches occupies a leafy setting on the banks of the Étang de Châteaugiron fishing pond, (which is code for ‘don't forget your angling gear’). Les Grands Bosquets is also on the outskirts of Châteaugiron (a 10-minute walk or a five-minute bike ride – bikes are available for hire at the site). Officially recognised as a ‘Small Town of Character’, Châteaugiron is a sweet place with pastel-coloured half-timbered buildings and a medieval moated castle. In addition to several independent shops (bakeries, butchers’ and grocery stores), there are also a handful of restaurants, which is good news for those who don’t fancy firing up the barbecue at dinner. Your four-legged buddy is welcome here – just be sure they are up to date with their vaccinations and kept on a leash while on site. The shaded path skirting the fishing pond is a top spot for walkies, and if you follow it all the way to the northwestern tip of the lake, you reach a playground with slides and climbing structures. So, hopefully, that’s both dog and kids happy. And for the grown-ups? For those who are not into fishing, there are tennis courts next door, plus more hiking trails in La Glaume (five minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This is a very clean and well-maintained campsite, praised for its modern and spacious facilities, including showers and toilets. Guests highlight its fantastic location next to a lake and within easy walking distance of a pretty town with shops and restaurants. Pitches are generally well-defined and quiet. While most visitors had an excellent experience, a few noted occasional noise from local parties or teenagers in the adjacent park, and some found pitches to be on the smaller side. Overall, it is highly recommended for its value and welcoming atmosphere.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked The location close to the exceptional town and cleanliness of facilities. Loved the town.

Disliked Very basic site with very little there. More a camp site than a motorhome stopover.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Location for town was nice. Cycling in the area was quiet and fairly easy. Instructions for arrival were easy to follow.

Disliked On two of the three nights we stayed it was incredibly noisy. One night a local house had a party with loud music and group singing until 2am. On another night there were teenagers running around screaming and shouting in the park (right next to the campsite) until around 2am. They were also doing laps on their motor bike which was really loud. A shame as we liked the location. I would recommend based on location and we perhaps just got unlucky. But will look for alternative campsite next time.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Near a pretty village and castle. Beside a " lake" but not really like the picture. Clean toilets and showers.

Disliked Very noisy jackdaws and barking dog!! Unfortunately our stay coincided with the overnight stay of 40 scouts. So not very peaceful. Pitches marked out with hedges but electricity not always near your pitch. If you camped next to the lake it could be noisy at night with young people meeting up.

Local attractions

Treasure hunts, mazes and escape room-type riddles await at Enigmaparc (10 minutes’ drive), where the entire family can put their thinking caps on to find clues and crack codes in 12 different themed areas, including Greek mythology and pre-Columbian civilisations. In the middle of a lush forest, La Roche aux Fées (20 minutes) is an impressively preserved dolmen dating back 5,000 years. The gigantic proportions of its stones led to the popular legend that it couldn’t possibly have been built by humans, but by supernatural beings – hence its name (fairies’ rock). In Rennes (half an hour), the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes has archaeological artefacts, Renaissance paintings and a cabinet of curiosities with weapons, musical instruments and other items from Asia, Africa, Oceania and America. On Saturdays, stop at the Marché des Lices to stock up on seafood from the Breton coast and to sample local fare like galette-saucisse (crêpe with sausage).
