  • Grass pitches at a family-friendly site a short walk from Châteaugiron
  • La Roche aux Fées 20 minutes’ drive; Rennes half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; next to a fishing pond; cycle hire on site
There’s more to Brittany than its (admittedly spectacular) rugged coastline. Those who wander inland can expect to find ancient forests, prehistoric sites and splendid castles… and all of those are within easy driving distance of Camping Les Grands Bosquets. This site with well-maintained grass pitches occupies a leafy setting on the banks of the Étang de Châteaugiron fishing pond, (which is code for ‘don't forget your angling gear’). Les Grands Bosquets is also on the outskirts of Châteaugiron (a 10-minute walk or a five-minute bike ride – bikes are available for hire at the site). Officially recognised as a ‘Small Town of Character’, Châteaugiron is a sweet place with pastel-coloured half-timbered buildings and a medieval moated castle. In addition to several independent shops (bakeries, butchers’ and grocery stores), there are also a handful of restaurants, which is good news for those who don’t fancy firing up the barbecue at dinner. Your four-legged buddy is welcome here – just be sure they are up to date with their vaccinations and kept on a leash while on site. The shaded path skirting the fishing pond is a top spot for walkies, and if you follow it all the way to the northwestern tip of the lake, you reach a playground with slides and climbing structures. So, hopefully, that’s both dog and kids happy. And for the grown-ups? For those who are not into fishing, there are tennis courts next door, plus more hiking trails in La Glaume (five minutes’ drive).

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Lovely town with chateau, major put on fireworks for foundation day while we where there in park right behind camp, there was a nice barbeque/bar in town great food and beer, town was less than 5 minutes walk from camp we cycled to supermarket was about 2.5 km away.

Disliked Our pitch had pine tree dropping pine cones we had to clear them up before we could put tent up, reception could not tell as if we could fish lake in park would not use for long stay maybe just stop over, park right next to camp was public a lot of noisy teenagers our pitch was on fence line right next to park

Local attractions

Treasure hunts, mazes and escape room-type riddles await at Enigmaparc (10 minutes’ drive), where the entire family can put their thinking caps on to find clues and crack codes in 12 different themed areas, including Greek mythology and pre-Columbian civilisations. In the middle of a lush forest, La Roche aux Fées (20 minutes) is an impressively preserved dolmen dating back 5,000 years. The gigantic proportions of its stones led to the popular legend that it couldn’t possibly have been built by humans, but by supernatural beings – hence its name (fairies’ rock). In Rennes (half an hour), the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes has archaeological artefacts, Renaissance paintings and a cabinet of curiosities with weapons, musical instruments and other items from Asia, Africa, Oceania and America. On Saturdays, stop at the Marché des Lices to stock up on seafood from the Breton coast and to sample local fare like galette-saucisse (crêpe with sausage).
