Countryside views or the convenience of town life for your Finistère break? How about a bit of both, all rolled into one excellent location? Peaceful Au Bord de l’Aulne is surrounded by pretty countryside, and it’s five minutes’ drive/half an hour’s walk from the riverside town of Châteauneuf-du-Faou. There are cosy family restaurants and casual riverside bars in Châteauneuf-du-Faou if you fancy sampling local cuisine; otherwise, pick up supplies in the shops and supermarkets for picnics or barbecues at your pitch. If you do choose to eat on site, you can expect a backdrop of the parkland of a private estate, with glimpses of the ornate towers of Trévarez Castle between the trees. Rural activities galore can be had around here – this Brittany site is a few minutes’ walk from the Nantes-Brest Canal for walks, bike rides or canoe trips, and it’s also 10 minutes’ drive from the Camaret à Vitré, which follows a former railway line along the meandering River Aulne. Beach bunnies can be on the sands at lively Concarneau in around 40 minutes’ drive, and there’s plenty of lovely coastal and countryside terrain to explore in the Armorique Regional Natural Park (about 20 minutes away). It’s worth noting that this site has no toilet or shower facilities, so you’ll need to be self sufficient on that front. Dogs are welcome, but they’ll need to be kept under tight control around the resident goats, dogs and cats (who quietly rule the roost here).

Local attractions

There are some excellent places to get out for a walk or bike ride in this area, but if you need activities with a bit more adventure involved, take yourselves to Adrénature Adventure Park (40 minutes’ drive) – Finistère’s largest adventure park has 19 different courses to follow, suitable for ages three and up. Back down at ground level, you can calm things down with a stroll around Trévarez Castle (10 minutes), a gorgeous building with Art Nouveau interiors, fabulous views and a fascinating past. There’s also a lot of heritage to explore in Quimper (35 minutes), where you can visit the cathedral, wander through the medieval quarter and learn about the area’s pottery tradition at Musée de la Faïence. Down at the coast, you may like to take a walk around Concarneau (40 minutes), visiting the fishing museum and aquarium before hitting the beach. Boat trips to the Glénan Islands leave from Trévignon (50 minutes), and there are also sandy beaches and surf lessons in Kervel (45 minutes).

Liked Es una casa particular aislada, con un jardin espectacular de hierba.
Muy tranquilo, con caseta de madera con inodoro seco. Toma de luz y agua.
El propietario muy amable y sevicial. Estuvimos solos, por lo que muy tranquilos.

Disliked Al ir con furgoneta, dormimos en una explana asfaltada.
No hay duchas, nuestra furgoneta es pequeña y tuvimos que ducharnos fuera con la mochila de agua.
