  • Quiet site in the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park
  • On a farm half an hour’s drive from Utah Beach, a D-Day landing beach
  • Cider products for sale; farm tours (additional fee) on Thursdays
Your first port of call once you've arrived at Ferme de La Tournerie might be getting your hands on a chilled cider, because this quiet Lower Normandy farm in the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park sells a range of tasty apple products, including Pommeau, Calvados, apple juice, cider vinegar and cider. Normandy’s Cotentin Peninsula, which sits south-east of the English Channel, is an excellent spot for birdwatching, boating and walking. Head up to the Baie des Vays, half an hour’s drive away, to tour the oyster farms or make a beeline for the historic D-Day landing beaches, where the Allied Forces fought against Germany in 1944. Utah Beach and the Utah Beach Landing Museum are a half-hour drive away from the site. On the other side of the Baie des Vays, within a 40-minute drive of the site, is Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, Maisy Battery and D-Day museums housing historic items like World War II tanks and guns. Back at your quiet, clean base, there’s a playground where kids can do what kids like to do, and handy amenities like barbecue points, toilets and showers, a washing-up area and a launderette. Surrounded by countryside, the farm has quite a few residents, including ducks, donkeys, goats and cows. Guests can get up close to their routine of waddling and trotting around by booking onto a farm tour (for an additional fee), which runs from 4pm to 6pm on Thursdays.

Local attractions

A fair few big Normandy tourist attractions can be ticked off while you're staying at Ferme de La Tournerie. Famed Mont Saint-Michel (an hour and a half' drive), a tidal island topped with a grand abbey, can be reached by driving south of the site. Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (50 minutes), surrounded by D-Day beaches and popular for its stunning Renaissance-style Ravalet Castle, is in the opposite direction. To fit a beach day into your plans, Créances beach (20 minutes) is the closest stretch of sand – and what a stretch it is, backed by windswept dunes. Just a little further along the coast is Plage de Denneville (half an hour), another wide sandy beach with dunes. Those who’d rather stay more local can keep their eyes peeled for birds like sedge warblers, sandpipers and wagtails in the surrounding Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park, perhaps renting a pedal boat or settling in for some peaceful time with the fishing rod at Étang des Sarcelles (10 minutes).
