If your kids (or indeed your good selves) are keen on cute animals, you’ll definitely want to plan a stay at Le Pas d’Âne. This small and peaceful Calvados site is part of a donkey farm where you’ll get to meet the nine donkeys (and take them for a walk if you like) as well as other farm animals. At this quiet location 10 minutes’ drive from Souleuvre en Bocage you’ll set up camp on pitches within the apple orchard – a really lovely location for a rural break. Everything here has been set up to have minimal impact on the natural surroundings, with facilities including solar showers, rainwater harvesting for the toilets and an amenities room created from eco-friendly lime and hemp housing a kitchenette for guest use. You’re welcome to cook outside on your barbecue instead if you prefer; either way, you can pick up supplies at the small supermarket in Souleuvre en Bocage or the bigger shops 20 minutes’ drive away in Vire-Normandie. When you’re not cooing over the cute donkeys at the farm, there’s plenty to keep you busy nearby, from gentle barefoot walks to more adventurous tree-climbing and toboggan parks. Caves, zoos and – of course – distilleries are all easy to get to as well.

Liked Lovely off beaten track old school camp site, watch out for the mad cat gets everywhere !! Two showers n toilets plenty for a small site we had hook up with motor home parked by huge bunnies, it did trip in storm that night no issues though

Liked Rural escape but only 20 mins from large supermarkets etc , secluded and quiet , well cared for donkeys. Dated but functional facilities.

Leave the donkeys behind for a little while and you can head out to meet some different animals at either Zoo de Jurques (10 minutes’ drive) or Zoo de Champrépus (40 minutes), both home to lots of exotic beasts. For a little bit of gentle activity, cast your shoes off for a stroll at Pieds Nus Garden (15 minutes); places like Normandie Luge (10 minutes) and Skypark Normandie by AJ Hackett (15 minutes) are on hand for those seeking a bit more of a fast-paced thrill. And if any of that has left the grownups feeling a little fraught, perhaps a tour and tipple at Distillerie La Monnerie (half an hour) would help. Other outings worth seeking out nearby include the cave tours at Souterroscope Ardoisières (25 minutes), the tiny models at Le Monde Miniature - Clécy (half an hour) and the assorted outdoor activities at Le Village Enchanté (40 minutes).
