What customers say

This well-maintained, peaceful campsite in a beautiful natural setting is praised for its exceptionally clean facilities and friendly, helpful owners. Visitors enjoyed the tasteful design of the grounds, shop, bar, and restaurant. Chalets are clean with well-equipped kitchens and nice bathrooms. Pitches are large and flat. While some mention the remote location and challenging local roads, the overall experience is one of tranquility and a highly positive stay.

Electric grass touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely small, quiet site with beautiful scenic Views

Disliked Members of staff were rude and patronising. Not sure what nationality he was, but wasn’t French. On arrival we were informed we had booked a caravan pitch instead of a CV pitch. He made a great deal about the booking and “trying to squeeze us in”, apparently they only allow5 CV on the site. During this, another customer arrived and he began to serve him and completely ignored us. When eventually we got to our pitch, we noticed there were plenty of empty one and It didn’t seem to make any difference whether you had a caravan, CV or tent. Not a friendly welcome at all which was a shame because this stopped us staying for another night. Also had the feeling he didn’t like the English.

From the manager: Dear Lynn,

We are sorry to hear that you experienced your stay with us as unpleasant. I would like to clarify the points you mentioned in your review. It is true that we only have 5 motorhome pitches on the campsite, which is why it becomes difficult when a wrong reservation is made – in your case, a pitch for a caravan was booked. I did my very best to try and fit you in for one night, and eventually managed to do so thanks to the gentleman who came to the reception. The reason I helped him before you is that he was ultimately allocated the pitch you had reserved, which meant you were still able to stay with us. The extra cost for a motorhome pitch compared to a caravan pitch was not charged to you – as I mentioned with a smile, this was my gift to you.

It may have come across that I was a little short in my response, but this was already the third motorhome arriving that made a caravan reservation and not a motorhome pitch that day. We really do not want to say “no” to our guests – in some cases we do have to send them to another campsite, but in your case we were able to convert the pitch. It took some figuring out, but in the end it worked out.

You are correct that you saw several empty spots on the campsite. We clearly separate tent, caravan, and motorhome pitches to ensure that certain spots are not made unusable for tents due to the weight of motorhomes. It can happen that the campsite (especially in the early or late season) is almost empty, yet we still have to send motorhomes away because we already have 5 on site.

We regret that you did not share your concerns with us directly, as we could have provided you with more clarity in advance. And for the record – we absolutely love the English! ;-)

We wish you a pleasant continuation of your holiday.

Plomb du Cantal 2 bedroom lodge (pet friendly)

Liked Lovely location, with beautiful views. Driving was a delight 😊 the campsite is situated in a small village and has its own shop opened until late in the evening. We have stayed at one of the chalets and were really pleased with the space, it was very clean, it has a really nice bathroom and well equipped kitchen.
Please don't forget to bring your own bed linen (mentioned in the description also). You will be provided with pillows and duvets just need your own bedding.
Dog friendly too 😊
The campsite looks really well and pitches are also big and on a nice flat surface and amenities are well taken care of.
For summer nights there is also a nice outdoor terrace where you can enjoy a drink or snack.
Definitely added on our list of places to stop when travelling in the area. We visited on a very quiet period and enjoyed peace and tranquility and a very good night sleep and hopefully it is not too noisy in the main season either.

Electric grass touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful little peaceful site in stunning scenery. Owners are delightful and so helpful. Spotlessly clean facilities. Pretty little village although somewhat remote. Food in snack bar very nice and prices of food and drink very reasonable. Sound of cow bells as morning alarm call is a wonderful sound. A perfect site to sit back and let nature slow you down.

Disliked A bit remote for some so unless you enjoy walking or cycling up hills then not a lot to do. Reliable vehicle needed to travel narrow mountain roads. None of this is a detriment to what the site is.

Local attractions

Camping La Santoire is within the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park, one of the biggest natural parks in Europe. You might agree it's one of the most spectacular too: its vast expanse covers around 975,000 acres across the departments of Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme, made up of peaks, forests and hot springs. It's just over an hour from Camping La Santoire to the main tourist office at the park in Aydat. Closer to home, access the GR4 for hiking hours around those local lakes and waterfalls, or take your energetic self for more of the same around the extinct volcano of the Puy Mary, 45 minutes' drive away. Jump onto the tourist train of the Gentian Express 20 minutes away in Riom-ès-Montagnes, running 16 kilometres to Lugarde past the Barajol, Lugarde and Chassagny viaducts. The Super Besse and Super Lioran ski destinations are around 35 minutes' drive away in either direction from the site.
