Looking for a stopover on a long-distance hike, or simply a scenic spot where you can settle for a peaceful Auvergne break? Either way, you’ll be very welcome at Camping Deneuvre, just under a mile from the village of Châtel-de-Neuvre. This family-friendly site is in an attractive location on the banks of the Allier river, so you can go fishing here or just take in the relaxing views. If you’ve got your own canoe or kayak, you can launch it just by the site (and if you don’t have your own kit, you can hire it in Moulins, 20 minutes’ drive away). As for those long-distance hikers, the GR300 and the Via Allier pass close by, making this a handy place for a break en route. The surrounding Val d'Allier National Nature Reserve has plenty of trails for less demanding walks, and the wider area has lots of options for days out, from pretty villages to family fun at the popular Le Pal. There are options for activity back on site too – play a game of pétanque or table tennis or let the kids make the most of the playground, kids’ games and toys while you relax with a book from the library. The local village has a shop, a bar and a bakery, but you won’t have to go that far for sustenance – the site has its own licensed bar that’s open throughout the day, and a small restaurant available for a couple of hours in the evening (reservations required). You can also buy ice creams and local wine on site, and order your bread and pastries in high season.

Local attractions

Even if you’re not tackling one of the long-distance trails, it’s worth getting out for a walk in this area – the Val d'Allier National Nature Reserve has lots of pretty scenery and wildlife to spot, or you can ramble through the vineyards around Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule (10 minutes’ drive). For other activities, join guided canoe trips from Moulins (20 minutes), take on the treetop trails at Parc Aventure Les Perchés (15 minutes) or try out the water activities at Natural Wake Park (15 minutes). There are plenty of cycle paths around too, or you can ride the Velorail Du Bourbonnais (25 minutes). Le Pal (half an hour) is perennially popular with younger kids for its rides and animals; for teens, the colourful murals of Street Art City (50 minutes) might be more their style. Meanwhile, if you like to wander around a traditional village, point your compass towards places like Souvigny (20 minutes) and Charroux (half an hour), both very attractive places for a stroll.
