Beaches to the west, forests and wetlands to the north, mountains to the east, the Spanish border to the south – it’s fair to say that La Ferme des 4 Chênes is pretty handily located for folk who seek variety on their Basque break. This peaceful Pyrénées-Atlantiques place is just outside Urt, in a quiet spot with plenty of space for relaxing but only a 15-minute stroll from the village’s supermarket, restaurants and bakery. Boat trips and kayak tours on the Adour river can be had from the village, and it’s a good jumping-off point for hikes and bike rides along marked country trails. Being a proudly traditional place, it’s quite possible that you’ll stumble upon folk playing the locals’ fave game of pelota of an evening too… Biarritz, Bayonne and the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park are all within a half-hour drive for those looking to roam. If, on the other hand, you need some loafing time, there’s plenty to keep you occupied on site – settle by the outdoor pool for swims and sunbathing, play games of pétanque, table tennis or table football, or work off a bit of that fine French food at the fitness area. A playground and mini farm (with friendly donkeys, goats and ponies) should keep les enfants happy. For eats, there’s a communal barbecue area, a bread ordering service and a snack bar where you can pick up drinks and ice creams.

Set your sights towards the seaside and the splendid sands around Biarritz half an hour away: there’s a gorgeous collection of beaches over here, including the kid-friendly Grand Plage, the quieter Port Vieux cove and the surfers’ hotspot La Marbella. Shortly before you hit the coast, it’s worth stopping in the town of Bayonne to wander through its half-timbered streets, ramble on its medieval ramparts and pick at foodie treats – the local ham is particularly famed, and there’s a raft of chocolate shops and a chocolate museum for sweet-toothed types. Head north for half an hour to work off some of that grub with a stroll, bike ride or horseback trek in the scenic Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park. Or get set for a splashing time at Base de Pop, 20 minutes away – a crazy collection of inflatable obstacles, zipline and water jumps caters for the active types, and there's a lovely lake beach and watersports including kayaking and paddleboarding for folks who fancy more of a chillout.
