Local attractions

The gorgeous once-fortified village of Larressingle (20 minutes’ drive) has plenty to engage lovers of history and architecture, such as its gently crumbling castle ruins and tiny, austere Église Saint-Sigismond surrounded by stout walls. Within this medieval complex there are a couple of bars – just the spot for a refreshing glass of regional Côtes de Gascogne wine. Pretty Nérac (15 minutes) has a cluster of half-timbered buildings at its centre, and a museum showcasing the history of the local areas in the Château de Nérac – once home of King Henri IV. Have a peaceful wander through the leafy Parc de la Garenne, and admire the view across the rooftops from the belvedere above the River Baïse. Cool off afterwards with a dip in the Grecian-themed swimming pool at Lud’O Parc (20 minutes). Condom (10 minutes) is yet another gorgeous town, with jewel-coloured stained-glass windows in the 16th-century cathedral, peaceful vaulted cloisters and several fine old mansions to tour. Culture dealt with, you can also take a barge trip along the Baïse, ride a bike along its banks or see how local Armagnac is made in its namesake museum.
