Set between pine forest and Médoc vineyards at Le Verdon-sur-Mer, Camping La Pointe du Médoc is a 17-acre haven of greenery on the Gironde estuary where it meets the Atlantic. Its tree-shaded pitches have electric hook-ups and the shower blocks, laundry service and shared kitchen with microwave, fridge and freezer are a couple of minutes’ walk away. The site’s daily action flows around the pool complex, with its heated outdoor pool, waterslide, heated indoor pool and paddling pool. Families can also play basketball on the multi-sports pitch, and there’s pétanque, ping-pong and beach volleyball next to the play area for friendly tournaments. Not enough to keep your children busy? There are kids’ and teens’ clubs, and a mini farm where you can all cuddle ponies and goats. When you’ve had enough of running around, head for the wellness area and luxuriate in a sauna or book a massage to ease any aching limbs. Once relaxed, make a beeline to Le Médocain restaurant to tuck into Gironde specialities like Arcachon oysters and local Médoc wines on the covered terrace. There’s also a snack bar, ice-cream parlour and grocery store to keep hunger pangs away during the day.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Fantastic people. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming from the guys in the shop to the animation team to the cleaning staff to the reception. The facilities were very good and the site was not too ‘polished’ in a more rustic rural setting. The pitch size was huge with water and electric. Really lovely.

Disliked Unfortunately the cafe let this really lovely site down. It is a franchise and the manager was so so rude and unfriendly. He treated his female staff like second class citizens. Proper training is needed by a competent manager. Claudia was amazing but we didn’t see her for the last few days so we wouldn’t be surprised if she has left. Whilst the food was atrocious, what was really upsetting was that when he was confronted by us and the director of the site he did not back down. He was so rude and arrogant that we would strongly recommend that whilst this franchise is in place you do not eat on site.

Liked Emplacements spacieux pour camping car mais apparemment l’année prochaine que des mobiles homes
Le bruit de la route n’est pas dérangeant

Très bonne situation géographique avec plein de sentier piéton et vélo très agréable

Disliked Les douches sont ouvertes à tout vent et pas très propres
La tonte de pelouse à 14h un jeudi de l’ascension

Cyclists can hire bikes on site to tick off sections of the Vélodyssée Cycling Route; head south for sandy beaches and seaside resorts like Soulac-sur-Mer (20 minutes by bike), with its eye-catching Belle Époque villas. Head north to the Phare de Grave (10 minutes), a landmark lighthouse poised over the confluence of the Gironde and the Atlantic. Walkers may like to hike footpaths lined with ancient oak trees in the Marais du Gua (20 minutes’ drive) wetlands. Laidback Le Verdon-sur-Mer (five minutes) has a pleasing mix of sandy oceanside and estuary beaches for swimming, dinghy sailing and kitesurfing. You can also have a nose around the yachts in Port Médoc marina, or snaffle up an oyster and langoustine feast in one of the informal waterside eateries. If you’d like to taste some local wines, follow the Médoc Wine Route to Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac (both 50 minutes) vineyards. The ferry from Pointe de Grave (five minutes) takes you to Royan on the other side of the estuary in half an hour. Once there, you can soak up the sun on Plage de la Grande-Conche, admire the streamlined concrete exterior of the Church of Notre-Dame de Royan and learn about the town’s long history through colourful displays in the Musée de Royan.
