Grass pitch with space for all your kit

  • Quiet grass pitches on the edge of the town of Wasselonne
  • A half-hour drive from Strasbourg and easily accessed by bus
  • Sports facilities and play area on site, plus food trucks in summer
Wines, walks or whatever else brings you to Alsace, you’ll be in an excellent spot for exploring when you stay at Camping L'Orée d’Alsace. This quiet site is on the edge of Wasselonne, not far from the start of the Alsace Wine Route and close to several walking and bike paths. With a bus stop close by for services from Strasbourg, this place is a great choice for those travelling around without a car. This is a well-known area for wine production, and there are numerous wineries close by that you can visit for tours and tastings. Being on the edge of a town also means you’ll have easy access to bars and restaurants where you can sample local drinks and food, plus shops for when you’d rather pick up supplies to take back to your pitch. In fact, you don’t even have to leave the site to find supplies – there’s a small shop that’s open all season, and in high season you’ll also have access to food trucks, a bread delivery service and a kiosk selling drinks and ice creams. Other facilities on site include a launderette, a motorhome service area and well-equipped bathrooms. There’s no wifi here, though, as guests are encouraged to focus on the fresh air rather than screen time. Having stashed your gadgets away, you can instead fill your time on site playing games of football, beach volleyball, basketball or pétanque, or taking the kids to the play area. There are also tennis courts available a couple of minutes’ walk away for a small fee.

Local attractions

Start your stay with a stroll to your local town – pretty Wasselonne is about 15 minutes’ walk away, and well known for its Square Tower and Round Tower, which are remnants of its former castle. It’s a nice place just to have a wander among the half-timbered houses, but there are also several themed trails you can follow if you’d like to make sure you’ve seen all the best bits. If that’s captured your imagination, you’ll probably also enjoy a walk around the cute village of Obernai (half an hour’s drive). The ‘Little France’ area of Strasbourg (half an hour) is another place where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time; combine a bit of time here with visits to the city’s cathedral, museums and European Parliament. Also worth visiting locally are the archaeological collections at Musée du Château des Rohan and the Villa Meteor, the oldest brewery still in operation in France (both 20 minutes). You might also like to climb the steps and cross the ‘Devil’s Bridge’ to 12th-century Château du Haut-Barr (25 minutes), on a 470-metre-high rock.
