  • Wild camping at a working farm on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula
  • Victor Harbour 10 minutes’ drive; Cape Jervis ferry port 40 minutes
  • Stunning Back Valley views, a rich native wildlife and dark skies
If you think rural life might be for you, you can have a dry run at Green Pastures, a small-scale wild site on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. The well-tended gravel pitches are on a working livestock farm in the scenic Back Valley, about an hour and 10 minutes’ drive south of Adelaide. This is ‘proper’ wild camping so you’ll need to be mindful of bringing in everything with you; the shops and takeaways of Victor Harbour are about 10 minutes’ drive away. Your vehicle will need to be self-sufficient too, as there is no drinking water, no showers and no lavatories on the property. What you will find there, however, are blissfully peaceful surroundings, where the only sounds are of sheep and cattle grazing in neighbouring fields and bird song. As well as native birds, there are kangaroos and echidnas about; go quietly about your day and you may be lucky enough to catch sight of them. Due to the presence of wildlife and livestock, no pets are allowed on the property. There are far-reaching views over the valley from the sites, and when conditions are right, you’ll also have spectacular sunrises and sunsets, plus stargazing up into the dark skies on clear nights.

Local attractions

Victor Harbor (10 minutes’ drive) is a historic seaside town sitting on Long Bay and surrounded by sandy beaches. As well as numerous cafés and restaurants, it is well-known for the vintage Cockle Train, which steams its way along the seafront, and its horse-drawn trams, which cross the causeway to Granite Island when the tide is out. Hikers can pick up the Heysen Trail in Victor Harbour too; it wends its way through farmland to the dramatic, cliff-backed beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Cyclists can also join the Coast to Vines Rail Trail at Willunga (35 minutes). Coastal Deep Creek National Park (35 minutes) is worth a shot if you’d like to see more kangaroos and follow way-marked trails through the lush undergrowth down to the sea. If you’re looking for more South Australia wildlife adventures, Green Pastures is only 40 minutes’ drive to Cape Jervis, the ferry port for Kangaroo Island and its spectacular flora and fauna.
