It's free, quick and easy!
- Queensland campsite overlooking the Burrum and Gregory rivers
- Childers 25 minutes’ drive; Burrum Coast National Park 40 minutes
- Licensed bar and bistro at weekends; fishing, kayaking and hiking
Tucked neatly between the saltwater estuaries of the Burrum and Gregory rivers, Buxton Bush Camp has pitches spread out along the waterfront for a small number of RVs, caravans, trailers and campers. This rural Queensland hideaway is surrounded by pristine bushland and is something of a haven for anglers, kayakers and nature lovers.
If you're one of those people for whom camping isn't camping without campfires, you'll be pleased to hear there are several firepits located on the campsite for you to use. Thanks to the abundance of saltwater fish and mud crabs in the area, you can pull your own supper out of the water, fire up the barbecue and you’re good to grill a self-caught seafood feast. Bring your own firewood or buy it on site.
Your dogs are welcome to share your riverside adventure too, so you can all have a romp through the bushland or splash around in the water along the sand bar.
And just a couple of practicalities: facilities are pretty good, with hot showers to keep you all looking and feeling shipshape. There’s no wifi signal, but there’s a TV in the basic covered kitchen and eating area if you need to keep in touch with the real world. You'll often find something going on to join in with too – what with monthly live music, a licensed bar and bistro on Friday and Saturday afternoons, as well as free soda bread made in a traditional camp oven over coals.

Local attractions
Set on the famed Bruce Highway, carving its way north to south through Queensland, Childers (25 minutes’ drive) is a historic town that grew up around the state’s sugar-cane industry. Today you can take a self-guided heritage walk to colonial-style buildings housing art galleries, museums and shops, check out the original courthouse, and follow a sculpture trail through the streets.
If the kids are with you, they’d probably prefer feeding crocodiles or koala talks at Snakes Downunder Reptile Park and Zoo (20 minutes), before moving on to Flying High Bird Park (half an hour) to get up close to brightly coloured parrots, cuddly joey kangaroos and miniature ponies.
Keen to keep active? Head for the woodland trails for all levels of ability at Toogoom Mountain Bike Trails and Skills Park (45 minutes), or go bushwalking among the tea-tree wetlands and eucalyptus forest of Burrum Coast National Park (40 minutes) – keep a lookout for loggerhead turtles, which lay their eggs in nests on the beach between November and April.
