- Peaceful family-friendly site a five-minute drive from Dubbo
- Wellington 40 minutes’ drive; Lake Burrendong State Park an hour
- Dogs welcome; outdoor pool; well-equipped camp kitchen
In a convenient location halfway between Dubbo Regional Airport and Dubbo (about five minutes’ drive to either), in Orana County, New South Wales, Westview Caravan Park draws holiday-makers and overnight travellers with its tranquil and remote vibe. And how – you might ask – does it achieve that vibe while still being just off the A32 road? Simple: not only is this site pretty expansive (and therefore stretching well away from the main road), it is also lined with shade-giving trees that give it a rural feel while attracting assorted birdlife.
When you’re not busy birdwatching from your pitch, binoculars in hand, you might have a swim in the outdoor pool, keep an eye on the kids as they practise new tricks on the BMX track, or take your four-legged buddy for a walk along the tree-lined avenues. Be aware that dogs are not allowed in all accommodations. A pleasant dog-friendly walk is the one along the Macquarie River, just outside Dubbo. Continue along the river to reach Butlers Falls Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), where you may indulge in a spot of angling or boating.
In addition to a toilet/shower block with wheelchair-accessible facilities, Westview has a launderette, plus a well-equipped camp kitchen area with barbecue stations and a microwave, a communal fridge and a washing-up area. There are plenty of shops and supermarkets in Dubbo – and restaurants, in case you don’t fancy firing up the barbecue or heating a microwave meal.

Local attractions
Dubbo (five minutes’ drive) has plenty to keep visitors busy, from the open-range Taronga Western Plains Zoo, to the Old Dubbo Gaol, with interactive exhibits that illustrate the Australian penal system. There’s a playground at the riverside Biddybungie Reserve and a child-friendly adventure course at the Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden, which has five themed areas, including a Japanese garden.
Head south to Wellington (40 minutes), and take the Mount Arthur Apex Nature Trail, which is actually a series of circular paths through native vegetation (including dozens of orchid species). Take in the views of the town below you, before heading back down and driving a little farther to the Wellington Caves, with their remarkable rock formations.
Lake Burrendong State Park (an hour) is a popular destination for watersports (from paddleboarding to waterskiing) and for fishing. Walk vegetation-dense trails, check out the Burrendong Botanic Garden & Arboretum, or marvel at the engineering of the vast Burrendong Dam.
