A warm welcome is part of the experience at The House in the Village – drive about half an hour out of Tirana and you’ll get to this homely site in the grounds of a guesthouse in Pellumbas. This little mountain village is home to about 500 people, many of whom are keen to welcome guests to experience the authentic activities of their region. Staying here you’ll be on the edge of the village, about five minutes’ walk from the restaurants of the village centre and 20 minutes from the Black Cave, the area’s most famed tourist attraction. Trails will also lead you to the Erzen river, where you can swim, see the waterfalls or just wander through the gorge. Back on site, you’ll be staying in a large garden that’s full of fruit trees and has a developing vegetable garden that produces the ingredients for the tasty vegan dinners that are available on site every night. It’s a most peaceful place to sit and soak up the atmosphere of the countryside too – the scent of the fruit trees, the buzz of the bees, the chatter of the birds… In keeping with the authentic nature of the place, the facilities here are fairly simple, but guests have access to toilets, showers, charging facilities and a laundry area.

Local attractions

If you’ve glimpsed the countryside on the journey up here, you’ll no doubt want to get out and explore more widely for yourself. This location makes it easy to do that – the folk on site can give you ideas for trails that will show you the best views and wildlife the area has to offer. One of the favourite walks around here takes you through fields and meadows to reach the limestone gorge of the Erzen river, about half an hour away from the site, where you can see waterfalls and take a swim in some of the calmer areas of the river. The highlight of the area is of course the Black Cave, about an hour away on foot. Several thousands of years ago it was home to cave bears, before later being inhabited by humans in the paleolithic period. Later on, it had human residents again as a hiding place for villagers during World War II. A viewing platform now allows visitors to head into the 360-metre-deep cave to see some of its impressive stalagmites and stalactites; you might spot some bats flying around too.

Liked Atlas! Het ontvangst was fijn. De mensen die er verblijven zijn fijn, het eten is lekker... Het enige nadeel was dat we met onze huurauto niet helemaal boven konden komen, maar dat zorgde wel elke keer voor een fijn wandelingetje! :-)

Disliked De douche, want die was koud! ;-) Ik ben geen held met koude douches. Daarnaast zijn er veel vliegjes die royaal geprikt hebben.

Liked Pellumbas ist ein total schönes, idyllisches Ort. Wenn man am Ende das Hostel von Atlas erreicht, fühlt man sich wie im Paradies. Ein großer Garten, selbst angebautes Gemüse und ganz viele nette Menschen. Für Backpacker gleichermaßen wie für Familien. Wir haben in einer der Hütten geschlafen, die liebevoll gebaut, einfach, aber komfortabel sind. Atlas ist ein toller Gastgeber, Berater und Koch, sein plant-based Abendessen war großartig. Am liebsten wäre ich noch länger dort gewesen, es gibt wirklich nichts zu bemängeln.
