Bryn-Gwyn pod with view

General

  • On a working organic farm in the Welsh Marches with gorgeous views
  • A 20-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye; 40 minutes from Llandrindod Wells
  • Pony trekking next door; half an hour hike from Offa's Dyke Path

Gorgeous views over the Welsh Marches, sheep and cows grazing in the fields next door and, crucially, a lack of phone signal freeing you from any interruptions from ringing and dinging devices… the team at Powys Pods say that peaceful breaks are pretty much guaranteed at their working organic farm 20 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye.

Concerned by the concept of being completely cut off from the outside world? Don’t tell the boss, but actually a wifi connection is available at the site’s facilities area for when you need to keep in contact.

Local info (walking maps, activity brochures and contact details for nearby pubs) can also be consulted in more traditional form, as the folk in charge have gathered lots of it together in a folder for guests to peruse at their leisure. Inside that famed folder are all sorts of ideas for days out nearby: horse riding (from the handy stables next door), golf, canoeing, city wanders and lots (and lots) of country walks and bike rides.

A pub is 10 minutes’ drive away for times when you fancy having someone else do the dinner, but with all this space on site it’s highly recommended that you stock up on supplies (to stash in the fridge and freezer) and settle in for alfresco eats with a backdrop of valley views/spectacular sunsets/dark starry skies (depending on what time you wrapped up the day’s activities). A little covered kitchen with hotplate, barbecue and prep area has been set up to aid in such endeavours, along with picnic tables to eat at, and a firepit to keep warm by.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

As the farm dogs are working dogs, they aren't usually kept on a lead. However, if you'd prefer not to meet the dogs, please let the site know in advance and the owners will do their very best to keep them away from the accommodation area (although this can't be guaranteed). Please note, there may be other dogs on the farm too.

The two resident dogs will be protective of their territory around other dogs, and will bark initially. You must leave your dog in the car when you arrive, so that the owners can introduce the dogs in a controlled manner.

Please bring a bed or mat for your dog to sit/sleep on in the pod.

All visiting dogs must be wormed within three weeks of your stay at the site, using a wormer that contains Praziquantel (to eradicate tapeworm); details will be discussed with you before your arrival.

Bookings of three or more adults between the age of 18 and 29 are not allowed.

Peaceful and stunning views from the pitch which I nicely fenced off with ample of room. Toilet and shower huts are well equipped, you have 3 huts two showers and baby changer facility and the third having a dryer room. Off these you have the communal area which has all the basic cooking equipment over looking the hill side.
The welcome pack is a brilliant touch, which gives you loads of information and plenty of things to do and walks.

    Disliked:

The distance to the toilet isn't bad at all but a little pain when you have to go at 3am in morning.

The peace and quiet. The view from our pod was amazing, lovely watching the sheep and the cows trek across the fields in the mornings. Great having electricity in the pod and the fan for hot nights. Also the wifi was very useful as there was no phone signal but we could ring using wifi instead.
The showers were spacious with plenty of hot water. The cooking area was good with tables and seats and a kettle on site. Meant you didn't have to bring too much with you.

The quiet seclusion, the dark skies, the cleanliness of facilities, the available long walks... Sitting by the fire pit in an evening... Jess and Jake proprietors were extremely welcoming and helpful..A lovely place to unwind and simply relax.

    Disliked:

Nothing at all.... but ensure you take what you need, there is nowhere to pick up additional supplies, if anything is needed then it is 20 minutes plus to Hay on Wye and options there are still limited.

Out to see more of that the splendid scenery… both novices and experienced rein-wranglers can sign up for horse riding/pony trekking from the riding centre on the next-door farm, while golfers play a round or two at Rhosgoch Golf Club (10 minutes’ drive) and paddlers launch canoes or kayaks on the River Wye from various spots within a half-hour drive.

Walkers will get great value out of their boots around here too: head straight out onto 7,000-acre Ireland Moor straight from the farm, take the half-hour hike to pick up the Offa’s Dyke Path, follow routes from Kington (25 minutes’ drive), tackle trails in the Black Mountains (half an hour)…

Ready for a little rest? Take things a little more slowly by bimbling between bookshops in Hay-on-Wye (20 minutes), seek out local tipples along the Hereford Cider Route (40 minutes) or head out to meet cute creatures at the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (half an hour).
