  • Peaceful off-grid campsite with far-reaching Brecon Beacons views
  • A 25-minute drive to BikePark Wales; 20 minutes to Caerphilly Castle
  • A 10-minute walk from a pub serving home-cooked food
With views stretching as far as Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it’s easy to work out how Beacons View Camping got its name. This Monmouthshire pop-up campsite is set in secluded fields down a 1.5-mile single-track lane with plenty of passing places to make life easier for drivers. Mountain bikers, listen up: this is a clever base for cycling holidays, with both challenging and gentle bike rides nearby. Walkers can amble through woodland in Cwmcarn Forest (20 minutes’ drive) – any canine pals can join in too, of course, but must be kept on a lead back at the site. For everything else, there’s a supermarket in Blackwood (10 minutes) for picking up barbecue stuff – just please, no disposable barbecues on the grass; they must be raised up off the ground. Campfires are allowed in firepits only; the site owners can hire them out if you don’t have your own, and they also sell kindling. If you’d prefer someone else to do the cooking bit, there’s a pub nearby (10 minutes’ stroll, leave the car behind and make a night of it) where you can order home-cooked pub grub. And as this is an off-grid site, there are no electric hook-ups or shower facilities – just portable toilets and a mains water standpipe.

The best route to the site is off the A472 dual carriageway close to Sainsburys in Pontllanfraith. Take the exit for Mynyddislwyn – from here you can follow Google Maps or the site's own signs. This route is much wider than alternatives and has plenty of passing places.

Local attractions

The pitches at Beacons View Camping edge the challenging Mynyddislwyn MTB trail, while there are routes for competent mountain bikers at Tirpentwys Mountain Bike Trails (20 minutes’ drive). At BikePark Wales (25 minutes), beginners can take lessons on gentle tracks, while experts can whizz down steep black trails. Tuition, gear and bike hire are all available. Walkers will have their share of the fun too, with scenic forest tracks in Cwmcarn Forest (20 minutes’ drive) providing hikes for all different levels of ability. Feeling energetic? Take the route up to the Iron Age hill fort of Twmbarlwm (two hours’ walk). Kids can wander woodland paths at Ynys Hywel Centre (10 minutes), and if they need more excitement, there’s archery and pond-dipping too. For a taster of Welsh heritage, take a trip to moated Caerphilly Castle (20 minutes), where you can see modern reconstructions of medieval weaponry and wander around the restored towers, or head deep underground at A Welsh Coal Mining Experience (half an hour) for guided tours of a former mine shaft.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Nice friendly owners of the site, helped us locate the site the easiest way possible. Beautiful views, portaloo and fresh water on site.

Disliked Only dislike was the hills to get there but that isn't the owners fault. We had a very large van that was having issues with inclines.
