  • Family-run site on a working beef and sheep farm on the Llŷn Peninsula
  • Within 15 minutes’ walk of Aberdaron village and beach
  • Shops, bakery, cafés and the Wales Coast Path in Aberdaron
You’ll barely need to drive once you arrive at Maes Carafanau Gwythrian Caravan Site, a family-run site on a working beef and sheep farm on the Llŷn Peninsula. This handy site is only a 15-minute walk from Aberdaron village, where there’s a wide, sandy beach as well as shops, cafés and a bakery. From the village, get stuck into surfing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding in the bay, or lace up your walking boots and go rambling along the Wales Coast Path to other sandy beaches and rocky coves. Aberdaron is a nice little village to spend your time in, with St Hywyn’s Church above the beach dating back to the 11th century. When you're ready to put on the seatbelt and drive elsewhere on the Llŷn Peninsula, there are several beaches within a short drive of the site, including Porthor beach (five minutes’ drive away) and Porth Neigwl (half an hour). The farm is in the Llŷn Peninsula National Landscape and surrounded by hills, valleys and lush green fields with wildflowers, so there are plenty of places to walk or cycle along the small country lanes while soaking in the views. Amenities-wise, Maes Carafanau Gwythrian Caravan Site has a set of modern toilets and showers, as well as washing-up facilities. The sun sets attractively behind the farm fields, which are grazed by sheep and cows.

What customers say

This peaceful, working farm campsite offers stunning hill views and is a short, easy walk to Aberdaron village and its amenities. Guests consistently praise the exceptionally clean, modern, and well-maintained toilet and shower facilities, often described as among the best they've encountered. The spacious pitches and friendly, helpful owners contribute to a relaxed atmosphere. While generally well-received, some noted limited phone signal and occasional issues with dog owners not adhering to lead rules.

Electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked It is a 15 minute walk down to the village, longer coming back as it is uphill ! The site and facilities are clean and well kept and the owners were helpful and pleasant

Disliked I was only there 2 days so cannot say for sure, but it was certainly windy when I was there, I think the area is quite exposed. That isn't an issue for me and it certainly isn't the owners fault, but maybe you need to be aware of that.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Fantastic campsite with a very warm welcome from the owners. We were kindly placed close together with our friends, which made our stay even better. The site is very peaceful and well looked after.

The facilities were excellent. The showers were some of the best we've had while camping, with plenty of very hot water and cleaned daily. The washing-up area was also clean and with a large sink, as well as having a fridge and freezer available was a real bonus for keeping ice packs topped up for the coolbox. The kettle and toaster in the washing-up area were also a really thoughtful touch.

The children loved the trampoline, and the whole site had a lovely relaxed atmosphere. It's also perfectly located for Aberdaron, with a walkable route downhill into the village for the beach, pubs, places to eat and the local SPAR shop.

Disliked Very little to dislike! The only thing worth mentioning for future visitors is that mobile signal is very limited across all the providers we tried. There is some WiFi available in cafes and the pub in Aberdaron, but it's worth being prepared to be mostly disconnected during your stay. This didn't affect our trip at all and was actually quite nice to have a proper break from being online.

As it is a working farm, you do also get the sounds of animals and birds in the morning, so it isn't the place for anyone wanting a completely silent lie-in but that's part of the charm and exactly what you would expect from a farm campsite.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location, great facilities (hot showers, large cubicles, separate toilets, also a little mini kitchen area with a kettle, toaster, fridge freezer, sink and washing machine. Found via sat nav easily, and it’s just a 5/10 min walk into Aberdaron, 40 mins to Whistling Sands of Porthor. Would consider going again.

Disliked No real dislikes, just take your own loo roll as disappears fast. Phone signal is hit and miss on site as quite remote (it’s a farm in countryside so expected) but something to consider if taking children. Dogs meant to be kept on leads but some weren’t which is fine but having them marking territory close to my tent whilst I was cooking, and sniffing around another a guests tent and stuff not great

Local attractions

By now, you’re probably well aware that Aberdaron beach is within walking distance of the farm, and that plenty of other beaches are accessible via the Wales Coast Path or a quick trip in the car. One of those splendid spots is Porthor beach (five minutes’ drive), known for its ‘whistling sands’; slide your feet along the sand to get the full effect. A little further away is Porth Neigwl (half an hour), also called Hell’s Mouth. Surfers flock to this beach for the big waves from the Atlantic, although on calmer days it’s also a nice spot for sea kayaking. While you’re headed in that direction, perhaps take a short detour to the tearoom and ornamental garden at the National Trust’s Plas yn Rhiw (15 minutes), where the 16th-century manor house was restored by the Keating sisters Boat trips depart from Porth Meudwy (10 minutes) to the nearby Bardsey Island – keep your eyes peeled for choughs, grey seals and puffins – and while you’re here, you could also get to know Pwllheli (35 minutes), the peninsula’s lively market town. The modern marina is a busy base for watersports and sailing in Cardigan Bay. If you’re keen to see more wildlife, board one of the boats going out in search of dolphins, seals and birds.
