  • Adults-only pod in ancient woodland 10 minutes’ drive from Llangollen
  • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct 15 minutes’ drive; Wrexham half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; access to woodland walks; views of hills and cliffs
In the southern reaches of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape, surrounded by ancient oak woodland, Panorama Cottages has a blissfully private pod for loved-up couples (and their dogs) looking for a glamping break. From the moment you arrive on site and park your car in the hard-standing area, you might feel like you’ve discovered a pretty glorious corner of north Wales, with spectacular views of gentle green hills and the dramatic cliffs of Craig y Forwyn, and direct access into the woodland. But while you might be close to World’s End (or at least to the nature reserve of the same name, which is a 15-minute drive away), you’re not completely cut off from the world: the town of Llangollen, with its shops and restaurants, is 10 minutes away. Fully insulated for year-round comfort, whether on hot summer days or windy winter nights (there is also an electric radiator for additional warmth), the modern pod comes with a spacious wraparound deck with lighting and seating, plus a firepit area for al fresco hours spent looking for the Plough in the night sky. The cosy interior has a comfortable double sofa bed (bed linen provided, of course), a kitchenette with a single induction hob, mini fridge and sink (plus essential cookware and utensils), and a shower room with a state-of-the-art composting toilet. Those who can’t fall asleep without a couple of hours of their favourite TV shows can use the USB and HDMI inputs in the smart TV.

Local attractions

If you don’t have an issue with heights, consider booking a narrowboat ride along the top of the remarkable Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (15 minutes’ drive). Designed by Thomas Telford, the aqueduct was constructed in 1805 and carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee in a remarkable feat of engineering. With its own TV show, the local football club has put Wrexham (half an hour) firmly on the map. Keep your eyes peeled for Hollywood celebrities in the stands on match days; at other times, check out National Trust - Erddig, an elegant country house on the outskirts of town with vast areas of parkland laced with trails. Cross the border into England and visit Chester (50 minutes), whose ancient heritage includes Britain’s largest Roman amphitheatre and centuries-old defensive walls along the top of which it is possible to stroll. After taking a selfie with the ornate Eastgate Clock in the background, take a tour of the medieval cathedral.
