The lodge from the back

  • Luxury lodge on 11 acres of land a 15-minute drive from Welshpool
  • Lake Vyrnwy half an hour’s drive; Machynlleth 45 minutes
  • Well-equipped kitchenette; cast-iron stove; wood-fired hot tub
In the mood for a little luxury and self-pampering, perhaps accompanied by spectacular views over the green hills of Powys? Set on 11 acres of land (which you are welcome to explore during your stay), the lodge at Oak Hill Escape, a 15-minute drive from Welshpool, might just raise the bar for any future glamping trip impossibly high. First of all, there’s the absolute feeling of privacy: your only neighbours here are ancient oak trees and wildflower meadows (and the wildlife that inhabit them). Then there’s the lodge itself, a splendid Scandi-style structure with a high ceiling. In addition to a comfortable kingsize bed and large sofa bed (with luxury bed linen included, natch…), there’s a shower room and a kitchenette with a gas hob, microwave and air fryer, a fridge freezer and all sorts of kitchen utensils, pans and crockery. All you need to make yourself a cuppa (tea, coffee, sugar and milk), plus Welsh cakes, will be waiting for you on arrival. The lodge comes with central heating, but on a cold evening, you might want to light the cast-iron stove (which runs on bio-ethanol) for an extra dash of cosy ambience, which can also be achieved with the lodge’s dimmable lighting. Oak Hill Escape also has another ace up its sleeve, and that’s the private wood-fired hot tub, just outside the lodge. Have a relaxed soak, wine glass in hand, while taking in splendid hillside views or dazzling starry skies, before slipping into the soft bathrobes provided.

Local attractions

The largely paved towpath along the Montgomery Canal (15 minutes’ drive), which you can access at Welshpool, is a popular spot for relaxed walks or bike rides, during which you might catch sight of swans, otters and water voles. If you’re into watersports, it’s also possible to launch a canoe from the slipway at Welshpool Wharf. Created in the late 19th century, Lake Vyrnwy (half an hour) is a serene reservoir surrounded by the forested Berwyn Mountains. The lake is an important birdwatching area (it comes with multiple bird hides along its shores), with regular sightings of woodpeckers and peregrine falcons. And if birds of prey make your heart soar, be sure to pay a visit to the Dyfi Wildlife Centre – Cors Dyfi, just outside Machynlleth (45 minutes). This area of wetlands and bog has been home to breeding ospreys since 2011 (the best time to see them is April to September). There are also hen harriers and red kites, plus otters and dormice.
