The old quarry

  • No-frills site on a farm with goats a 10-minute drive from Wick
  • Reiss Sands 15 minutes’ drive; John o’ Groats half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; camp stove and drinking water; spectacular sunsets
Touring north-eastern Scotland and need a place to rest your weary head? If you’re happy to make do and forgo assorted frills and amenities, Ye Olde Quarry, in Caithness county, might just be the place for you. There’s much to commend this simple farm site surrounded by agricultural land: its location, for starters, a 10-minute drive from the town of Wick, with its harbour and its North Baths tidal pool (if you’re brave enough to take a dip). It’s blissfully remote (and peaceful – except for the occasional bleating of the resident goats), but also fairly easy to get to, sitting as it does on the long, straight Tannach Road. Although there are no facilities on site, the owners supply a camp stove, bottled water, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, and you’re welcome to fire up the barbecue. There’s a farm shop just under a mile away (20 minutes’ walk) for provisions, plus a pub serving hearty meals along the A99. After dinner, you can settle down with your loyal four-legged companion on the field with front-row seats for spectacular sunsets and pretty excellent stargazing, too. While you’re around these parts, you might want to check out the rugged North Sea coastline, with dramatic wave-battered cliffs and places like the Whaligoe Steps (10 minutes), carved out of the granite. Be extremely cautious if you decide to take the steps down to the water: they may be slippery and have unprotected vertical drops. For a more dog-friendly walk, head to Reiss Sands (15 minutes), a sheltered beach backed by sand dunes.

Local attractions

Get a primer in the local prehistory with a visit to the remains of the burial chamber at Cairn of Get (10 minutes’ drive), followed by the round and long tombs at Grey Cairns of Camster (20 minutes), and the Achavanich Standing Stones (25 minutes). Keep your eyes peeled for hen harriers flying overhead. Whether you’re into watersports or sightseeing, it’s worth taking a trip to Thurso (25 minutes), with the dramatic ruins of its coastal castle and the North Coast Visitor Centre, a museum displaying large stones carved with mysterious symbols by Vikings and Picts. Thurso Beach is a long stretch of sand with reliable waves for surfing. Make your way to the northernmost tip of the UK at John o’ Groats (half an hour), where you can take a picture next to the iconic sign detailing distances to places like Edinburgh and Land’s End. From there, continue west along the coast to Dunnet Head (45 minutes), where you might catch sightings of puffins and guillemots, plus grey seals.
