  • Small, peaceful glamping site next to Craig Laggan crag
  • A 10-minute drive from Dunkeld and near to hiking and biking trails
  • Dog-friendly and family-run; benches and fire bowls provided
Some epic stories will surely be told after a visit to Kennacoil, 25 minutes’ drive south of the Cairngorms National Park. The converted farm and mill are in the hills above the town of Dunkeld in Perthshire, conveniently close to hikes and mountain biking, and guests can begin their rambles with an ascent to the Craig Laggan crag and boulder field directly from the site. The peaceful place has a lot of wildlife around, including deer often spotted on the hill. The Hermitage trail (including woodlands, waterfalls and the Rumbling Bridge) is just a 10-minute walk away, although should you want to scout out the area by car, it’s just five minutes to the A9. Aberfeldy's castle and white-water rafting centre are a 25-minute drive away, and Pitlochry, home to the famed Blair Athol Distillery, is a 25-minute drive away. At Kennacoil, there are excellent views of the countryside and Craig Laggan crag, so it only adds up that each unit has a picnic bench and a fire bowl doubling up as a barbecue (firewood and charcoal are handily sold on site, too). Small, family-run and dog-friendly, the site has showers and toilets, including an accessible bathroom. There is also a shared kitchenette with a fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave for whoever is on the all-important breakfast or picnic-packing duties to use. Parking is provided next to each unit. Plus, all the accommodations are fully insulated and heated, adding to the comfy, cosy feel. In Dunkeld, 10 minutes’ drive away, easily sort out your grocery shopping or pub lunches. One riverside pub often hosts live music.

Local attractions

If you’re a hobby boulderer, mapping out the routes over Craig Laggan (above the site) should keep you nicely entertained. Mountain bikers can whisk their trusty wheels away to Craigvinean Forest (10 minutes’ drive) instead – and those who want some guidance can first visit the bike hire shop in Dunkeld (10 minutes) for a guided tour. There are a few outdoor activity organisers in the area for activities such as quad-biking (10 minutes), canyoning (10 minutes), four-wheel drive safaris (half an hour) and the Land Rover Experience Scotland (20 minutes). Feel inspired to note down some local history? Trot off to the 14th-century Dunkeld Cathedral (10 minutes), which has a small museum, and the Beatrix Potter Garden (10 minutes). Suppose you’re ever brainstorming activities for the kids instead? In that case, Dunkeld has a pottery studio and clay pigeon shooting. Make the Active Kids Adventure Park (20 minutes) your backup; it's also near a popular ice cream shop. A bit of rambling can easily be undertaken at the Corbenic Poetry Path (five minutes), Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre & Wildlife Reserve (15 minutes), Loch Freuchie (20 minutes) or Loch Tay (35 minutes) too.

Camping pod (pet friendly, three person)

Liked: Carpeted floor, shower room (far more than a cubicle) camping mattress

Disliked: The light was a bit dim but adequate and a head torch made reading possible
