  • Rural family-friendly site on the banks of the Water Of Ken river
  • Galloway Forest Park half an hour’s drive; Dumfries one hour
  • Wild swimming and fishing; play area and pétanque
Heart of the Glen – the name alone conjures up romantic images of wooded valleys, wind-swept hill walks and cosy evenings spent by a campfire sipping a wee dram. And that’s exactly what you can get when you stay at this remote site in a splendid rural corner of Dumfries and Galloway. And ‘remote’ means just that in this instance: the nearest shop is a 25-minute drive away (whether in Moniaive or New Galloway), so it pays to be organised and have everything you need for the barbecue (bring your own) before heading to the site. If you want to eat out, a pub in St John’s Town of Dalry (20 minutes) serves a seasonal menu featuring locally grown produce. But really, what you want to do here is forget about driving for a few days. Stay put, instead, and make the most of the peace, quiet and on-site leisure options, such as wild swimming, canoeing or fishing in the Water of Ken, which flows along the site. You might want to perfect your throw on the pétanque court or explore the local countryside with your canine companion, perhaps walking some of the nearby Southern Upland Way, which crosses Scotland from coast to coast. There’s also a play area, should the children not fancy joining you in any of your adventures.

Local attractions

Whether you’re into hiking, mountain biking or sitting quietly observing wildlife, head to Galloway Forest Park (half an hour’s drive). Walks come in various levels of difficulty (from woodland strolls through to scrambles up Merrick mountain), and there are heaps of MTB trails. At the Red Deer Range you can observe the behaviour of a 25-strong herd. The sandy beach at Ayr (55 minutes) overlooks the Firth of Clyde and is skirted by National Cycle Route 7, which leads all the way up north to Inverness. Burns Cottage, where the poet Robert Burns was born in the mid-18th century, displays his portable writing kit alongside manuscripts and personal effects. In Dumfries (one hour), the children might enjoy visiting the home that inspired JM Barrie to write ‘Peter Pan’: Moat Brae is an elegant mansion on the River Nith with treasure trails and a play room with costumes and other props. Exhibits at the Dumfries Museum include fossils and prehistoric weapons.
