Camping and touring pitches

  • Family-friendly campsite on the southern shores of Lough Allen
  • A kilometre from Drumshanbo; 15 minutes' drive from Lough Key
  • On-site canoeing, sailing, boating, kayaking and coarse fishing
Sitting pretty in County Leitrim, the Allen Centre is where one of Connaught's loveliest loughs comes to life. Head here for family-friendly breaks full of hands-on adventure activities like canoeing, kayaking, boating and coarse fishing. It's not always all hands on deck at this rural park, though – there's a lot to be said for just settling down on your plot and soaking up all the nature, or stepping back from the lough for laidback ambles or paddles along the Drumshanbo to Carrick-on-Shannon Blueway. There's a lot of ecology and impressive landscapes to explore away from the water too, as all the surrounding mountains are designated National Heritage Areas, providing ample habitat to a diverse range of plants and animals. The camping area has spacious pitches and plenty of spectacular scenery overlooking the lough and the Sliabh an Iarainn mountains, plus a good range of well-kept amenities including toilets, showers, a shared kitchen area and barbecue spots. All of this is just a kilometre from the centre of Drumshanbo, a friendly town that's well-known locally as an angler's paradise. Though small in size, it's home to a couple of food shops and traditional Irish pubs – just the thing to round off days spent on, in or by the water.

Electric grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely views beside the lake. Lovely flowers and trees planted. There is a large building onsite. Reception area has seating if its raining. Large kitchen. Separate dining area.
Within walking distance of Drumshanbo.
Activities on site include sauna, kayaking, hot tub.
Right beside blue way walk linking Acres Lake to to Lough Allen

Disliked The week we went was very busy. There was no designated tent spaces. No parking near the pitch(so you had to walk back and forth to the car to take out tent and camping gear). Everybody was packed in. You wouldnt really sit out because you are right in your neighbours space. Cleaning happened once a day, the bathrooms were dripping wet because the taps on the sinks dripped and the showers didnt drain quickly. Cars went in and out at night, the barrier wasnt used. Children and adults walking around at night making noise. Apparently there was security, but they were not effective. Probably wouldnt affect you if you are in a motorhome, but not really a great place for camping in a tent.

Electric grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nothing.

Disliked We stayed for 3 nights, the place was overcrowded and facilities were filthy. We paid for electricity, and it kept tripping, so we had no power for half the trip. There is nothing for the kids to do. It could really be a lovely spot if upgrades were made, like a playground, shop, massive overall on the facilities, Mark out pitches so that when you go off and come back there's not a caravan parked were you had sat outside your tent for breakfast.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The acceptance and the welcome, at such short notice.
Great location, wonderful scenery and all within a few minutes walk to town. A couple of nice pubs in Drumshanbo.

Disliked Overcrowding, albeit on a Bank Holiday weekend.
Noise levels and kids running about until all hours of the morning. Part of my motorhome was broken (minor damage but nonetheless, frustrating.
Sanitation/Washroom facilities limited, unkept, with limited hot water for showering.
Look! I'm not a moan. I've roughed it in the past and I love to see people enjoying themselves, especially kids (it brings me back to my youth), but lordy Lord. Maybe it was these peoples customs back home but when you see the 'strict' rules and regulations for such places being blatantly disregarded, and no action taken, it tends to place such establishments way down on your bucket list.
I'd be willing to give it another go, on an off peak season. The scenery alone is a factor that will draw you back.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Beautiful gardens and lake

Disliked Toilets and showers were dirty, and the disabled toilet was blocked 2 of the days.travelled to Leitrim to use the facilities. Power tripped several times because it was overloaded.
When we were leaving, the one-way system was blocked by multiple cars, leaving no alternative but to go the wrong way around a one-way system. Taking in to account people are driving campers and towing caravans there should be better parking management enforced to avoid vehicles getting damaged which is what happened.

Electric grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked • The campsite has a lot of open space.
• The natural setting is peaceful and could be nice under better conditions.

Disliked • Extremely poor hygiene: human waste was visible on the floors, and there was a strong, unpleasant smell throughout the site.
• No access to safe drinking water — what was available appeared to be moldy.
• No rubbish disposal facilities, resulting in trash being left around the campsite.
• Severely overcrowded due to what appeared to be an organized gathering.
• Loud and chaotic environment.
• Extremely loud music 22 hours a day - from afternoon to the next morning (about 7am). This music would then resume before 10am. This is despite multiple signs stating that music is to be turned off at 10pm aswell as the campsite being advertised as a “family friendly” campsite.
• We witnessed a violent incident involving suspected drug use, which made us feel unsafe.
• Overall poor site management and lack of oversight.

Local attractions

Drumshanbo (10 minutes' walk) has a handy visitor centre in the village centre, a good source of detailed information about the region's history, wildlife and attractions. If you're here in July and fancy making some music, you might like to head to the seven-day Joe Mooney summer school for a week of classes and concerts, or the An Tostal Festival's programme of street entertainment earlier in the month. For more outdoor exploration, drive west for a quarter of an hour to Lough Key Forest Park. This nearby activity centre may prove particularly popular with kids, who can zip around its woods on forest segways, drive over wooden bridges in purpose-built mini Jeeps or set off on an exciting and accessible orienteering course. Also at Lough Key, dramatic McDermott Castle (15 minutes' drive, then a short boat ride) warrants a closer inspection, as do nearby historic sites like the imposing plantation-era Parke's Castle (35 minutes), thirteenth-century Sligo Abbey (45 minutes) and Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery (45 minutes).
