  • Small, secluded and leafy tourer site on a working farm near Limerick
  • University of Limerick 15 minutes’ drive; Wild Atlantic Way 40 minutes
  • Seasonal produce, fresh eggs and honey for sale; cricket at weekends
Paying a visit to your kids at the University of Limerick but not keen to stay in the city? The tourer campsite at Crokers Farm is handily situated just 15 minutes’ drive away from the riverside campus. Well away from the buzz of the city but within easy reach, the site is set on a peaceful, tree-shaded family farm with sheep and beef cattle, vegetable and fruit gardens, and a whole host of ducks, geese and hens as well as honey bees. Separated by flowers, plants, and herbs (for your cooking) the spacious hardstanding pitches are sheltered by mature trees, and each has its own seating area with a picnic bench. Showers and a washing-up area are available on site, and there are handy communal fridges and freezers in which to store your edible goodies. You can stock up on honey and seasonal vegetables at the farm, and if you’re staying over the weekend, there are often cricket games or energetic airsoft tag games to watch or join in if you’re feeling energetic. Ballyneety (five minutes' drive away) is the local village, with a convenience store, petrol station and a pub with a beer garden and snooker table.

Non-electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: I think there is a very laid back style and vibe going on with this place. This was my third or fourth time staying here and I’ll be back again.

This time we arrived late and left early. The only facilities we used were the toilets. I’ve seen better and I’ve seen worse. These were quirky and functional. The pitches are good sized for a campervan, and I’ve seen large motorhomes parked up too.

As long as the neighbours are quiet, this is a very peaceful site. Only the sounds of nature to disturb/enhance your night.

Disliked: Not much to dislike, unless you are after a five star hotel standard of professionalism. This is a working farm with a much needed facility on the side. Convenient to the city and close to one of my favourite places, Lough Gur.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Tranquil and peaceful only when not being used by a large group of people on exercise in the surrounding woods.
Secure and safe behind a keycode barrier.
If you like it very very rustic and have all your own facilities onboard.

Disliked: Only single toilet, sink and shower, very dirty.
The site looks very unkempt and sadly neglected.

Local attractions

On the banks of the River Shannon, Limerick (15 minutes’ drive) is a hive of activity, packed with shops, galleries and museums. If you’re visiting to see your student offspring, there’s a whole heap of bars, pubs and restaurants just right for treating them to a meal out. You can also catch rugby games or book guided tours at Thomond Park (25 minutes), or go flat and jump racing at Limerick Racecourse (15 minutes). Golfers can get in on the act too, with Ballyneety Golf Club a mere five minutes’ drive away, while the future Ryder Cup venue Adare Manor Golf Club is 20 minutes’ drive. For spectacular coastlines, join the Wild Atlantic Way on the Shannon estuary (40 minutes) for dramatic seascapes, towering headlands and deserted sandy beaches. The arid limestone pavements of The Burren (an hour) and the awesome Cliffs of Moher (one hour 20 minutes) are just two of the spectacular landmarks along the route. Closer to the campsite, historians should seek out Lough Gur (15 minutes) for its neolithic stone circle, enclosed by 113 standing stones.
