It’s not quite ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ at Peacock Farm Camping, but it’s worth noting that this family-friendly spot is open to the public only for 60 precious days a year, so it pays to time your holiday just right… This is a pop-up site on a working farm on the south-eastern fringes of Lake District National Park, almost halfway between Kendal (10 minutes’ drive) and Windermere (15 minutes) – a pretty privileged location for exploring this spectacular corner of England, with views of distant wooded hills and fields framed by moss-covered stone walls. Amenities are on the simple side at Peacock Farm, but there are portable toilets for guests. In addition, you’re welcome to light up a barbecue or a campfire when it’s time for dinner – with the farm's own hand-made sausages and burgers available to buy on request (drop them a line ahead of arrival and they'll get them ready for you). Need other provisions? The nearest shop is just across the A591 (five minutes), or you can head into Kendal or Staveley (10 minutes). And if you fancy a pub meal (steak, fish and chips, curry…), you have to walk only about five minutes down the lane. There are dog-friendly walks in the vicinity, but while on the farm, please keep your canine buddy on a lead so as not to spook the resident animals, which include alpacas, fell ponies and sheep. There's also plenty of wildlife to be seen on your hikes – from red squirrels to nesting ospreys, especially at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where the peaty ponds also attract dragonflies and damselflies.

喜欢 Lovely place, not too far out but far enough out that you weren't disturbed, lovely to see the animals, toilets clean, washing up facilities, such lovely people too and let my children know when the sheep were being fed so they could watch! Thank you so much and we cannot wait to come back!

喜欢 Great location, liked the site, lovely views, up a track, great little spots to pitch which you can choose. Facilities what you expect when ‘wild camping’. In theory it should have been everything we like, but it’s not a suitable site for a young children unfortunately, so we won’t return.

不喜欢 Big groups pitched with a lot of partying going on. Even the smaller groups of young people in large tents were swearing and drinking till early hours of the morning. Young lads rally driving up the track, which I walked down with my 3 year old to see the horses, this frightened her as we had to get off the track quickly to be safe. There’s nobody enforcing the quiet time rules. So unfortunately we won’t be returning, which is a shame. Maybe during the week it’s better but avoid a Saturday night unless drinking and partying is what you enjoy.

The pretty town of Kendal (10 minutes’ drive) has characteristic limestone buildings and scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Check out the reconstructed dodo at the Kendal Museum, which also displays dioramas illustrating rather more local animals and plants, plus archaeological artefacts. Sitting on a vast estate with woodland and orchards, National Trust - Sizergh (10 minutes) is a medieval manor that has been home to the same family for 26 generations (that’s about 800 years, in case you were wondering). Stroll around the estate catching glimpses of hawfinches and butterflies, or head indoors to admire splendid Flemish tapestries and the Inlaid Chamber. Beatrix Potter lived at National Trust - Hill Top (40 minutes), between Windermere and Esthwaite Water, for more than 30 years. Her pretty cottage still houses her belongings, while the garden is an informal jumble of colourful flowers, plants and vegetables. The on-site second-hand bookshop has paperbacks and (as should be expected) a good range of children’s books.
