It’s not quite ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ at Peacock Farm Camping, but it’s worth noting that this family-friendly spot is open to the public only for 60 precious days a year, so it pays to time your holiday just right… This is a pop-up site on a working farm on the south-eastern fringes of Lake District National Park, almost halfway between Kendal (10 minutes’ drive) and Windermere (15 minutes) – a pretty privileged location for exploring this spectacular corner of England, with views of distant wooded hills and fields framed by moss-covered stone walls. Amenities are on the simple side at Peacock Farm, but there are portable toilets for guests. In addition, you’re welcome to light up a barbecue or a campfire when it’s time for dinner – with the farm's own hand-made sausages and burgers available to buy on request (drop them a line ahead of arrival and they'll get them ready for you). Need other provisions? The nearest shop is just across the A591 (five minutes), or you can head into Kendal or Staveley (10 minutes). And if you fancy a pub meal (steak, fish and chips, curry…), you have to walk only about five minutes down the lane. There are dog-friendly walks in the vicinity, but while on the farm, please keep your canine buddy on a lead so as not to spook the resident animals, which include alpacas, fell ponies and sheep. There's also plenty of wildlife to be seen on your hikes – from red squirrels to nesting ospreys, especially at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where the peaty ponds also attract dragonflies and damselflies.

This peaceful, back-to-basics spot boasts epic views & a chilled vibe. Love the freedom to pick your spot, friendly farmers & farm critters. Facilities are basic (portaloos, washing-up sink) but clean. Great base for the Lakes, though the track's bumpy & no drinking water. Profits go to charity.

Liked We had such a lovely stay at Peacock Farm Wild Camping! The views really are beautiful, there are some great walks in the area both long or short depending what you wish, and having two lovely local pubs nearby was a real bonus. We also really enjoyed the on-site axe throwing, and the animals were so friendly and adorable!

It was so peaceful and although the site was almost fully booked we were not overlooked at all, we had so much of our own space and it still felt private. This was a last min booking for us but it was fantastic value for money. We stayed in our tent box but the pitch was perfect for both a tent and a roof tent. This was our first visit, but it definitely won’t be our last. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay—we can’t wait to come back!

You can choose where you want to pitch up
There are 3 portaloos and sinks (no drinking water, washing only) which made it a step up from wildcamping
If you find a good flat spot you can be sheltered from wind and away from other campers

Disliked Field isn't very flat so choosing where you want to pitch up isn't as easy as it looks

Having to move the car away from the tent. We only had a small 2-man tent so I was relying on using the car boot for storage but had to shift it to the car park area on the other side of the field

Liked Turn up camp wherever you like semi wild camping with a couple of sinks and portaloos which were lovely and clean.
Three Alpacas live on site which dogs found interesting 😀

Liked It was lovely had a greet time the views were amazing are dog molly loved it nice people on site the site manager came a couple of times through the day checking everything ok and animals and alpacas were great

Disliked Tent let rain in get wet in the night so had to leave but nothing to do with farm

Liked We loved the scenery and stripped back camping experience. The portaloos were kept clean, site managed well and friendly staff who popped by on arrival.

Disliked Track on the way up to campsite very bumpy and tight. But not the campsite owners faults and the bumpy drive it worth it for the views you are rewarded with.

Liked Plenty of space on a busy bank holiday, felt like we had our own private area which was nice. Amenities were basic but knew that before we went, porta loos were looked after and washing up area was useful. Beautiful views and since we had space, meant it was very quiet. Was great we could have fire pit/ bbq. Will go back!

Liked We had an absolutely fabulous stay at this campsite. The site was beautifully maintained, clean, and had a really welcoming atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The toilets was just your standard port a loos but was kept clean.

The location was perfect, with lovely surroundings and plenty to see and do nearby. It was peaceful and relaxing while still having everything we needed close at hand. Very dog friendly too. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We genuinely loved every minute of our stay and were sad to leave. We would highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway, and we will definitely be returning in the future. Thank you for such a wonderful stay!

Local attractions

The pretty town of Kendal (10 minutes’ drive) has characteristic limestone buildings and scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Check out the reconstructed dodo at the Kendal Museum, which also displays dioramas illustrating rather more local animals and plants, plus archaeological artefacts. Sitting on a vast estate with woodland and orchards, National Trust - Sizergh (10 minutes) is a medieval manor that has been home to the same family for 26 generations (that’s about 800 years, in case you were wondering). Stroll around the estate catching glimpses of hawfinches and butterflies, or head indoors to admire splendid Flemish tapestries and the Inlaid Chamber. Beatrix Potter lived at National Trust - Hill Top (40 minutes), between Windermere and Esthwaite Water, for more than 30 years. Her pretty cottage still houses her belongings, while the garden is an informal jumble of colourful flowers, plants and vegetables. The on-site second-hand bookshop has paperbacks and (as should be expected) a good range of children’s books.
