Four-legged friends can go glamping too

Mar 4 2014 Posted by Samantha Marsh

As Crufts 2014 gets underway, Pitchup.com has some recommendations for dog-friendly campsites that’ll really get tails wagging.

We’re a nation of pet lovers and only the best will do for Rover or Lady, so outdoor accommodation specialist Pitchup.com suggests accommodation in comfy yurts and luxury pods where pampered pooches are welcome.

Pitchup.com’s ‘Best in Show’ recommendations for dog-friendly sites go to:

Tyddyn Goronwy Camping Park, North Wales

These fully insulated family camping pods are located in the spectacular Welsh countryside, near Snowdonia National Park. With coastal, woodland and hill walks, it’s an ideal spot for dogs. While out walking, dogs may even pick up some obedience tips from real-life working sheepdogs. Accommodation in the pods is simple with visitors requested to bring along camping equipment.  However the price includes use of sister site, Sunnysands Caravan Park, which has an indoor heated swimming pool and leisure facilities.

Price: From £40 per night for up to four people. Dogs are an additional £5 per night.

Lomond Woods Holiday Park, Scotland

This is Highland Terrier country, although dogs of all shapes and sizes will enjoy exploring the hills and woodland on the bonnie bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. This award-winning park, named Best Park in Scotland by VisitScotland, has added pods for 2014.  Each pod sleeps up to four people and comes equipped with a mini fridge, kettle and television.

Price: From £45 per night for two people.  Dogs stay for free!

Camping L'Hermitage des 4 Saisons, Dordogne, France

Les chiens with valid passports are welcome in the lodges at Camping L'Hermitage des 4 Saisons.  Set in four acres of countryside, surrounded by the forest and farmlands of Périgord Vert in the Dordogne, this stylish French site is a perfect retreat.  There are various extras available for visitors to book including breakfast delivered to the door and barbecues and organised dinners.  The owners can also arrange local produce tasting sessions. A swimming pool, Jacuzzi, pétanque court, table tennis, archery and pony rides are also available on site.

Price: A two bedroom lodge starts at £92.50 for four people per night (can sleep up to six). Dogs can stay from an additional £2.52 per night.

Canadian Fields, Ryedale, Yorkshire

For anyone who loves the history and culture of Yorkshire, this is just the spot.  With footpaths and byways on the doorstep and the North York Moors National Park just a stone’s throw away, it’s doggy heaven.  Linen, towels and toilet rolls are supplied here – which means two-legged guests don’t have to pack so much and four-legged friends have more room to stretch out on the drive up. Accommodation is for tents, tourers and motorhomes with optional electric hook-up, while the main site also has a shop selling homemade goodies such as cake, chutney and jam.  The site is close to Wombleton Airfield which played host to the Royal Canadian Airforce in WWII.

Price: From £100 per night, for five people.
