Check. Out. Those. Views… It’s all about the scenery, setting and wildlife at DanielsHoogte Private Reserve in the Western Cape, a working farm site where guests share the surroundings with a whole host of wildlife – from black eagles, fallow deer and lynx to porcupine, baboons and leopards. It possibly goes without saying but it’s definitely worth double-checking you've packed your binoculars for a stay here, to spend days peering at roaming animals from your 800-metre-high perch up on a mountaintop, with the fynbos-covered area and the coast around St Helena Bay unfolding right before you. Nighttime’s just as much of a treat for the eyes – there’s not much light pollution in these rural parts, so the stars sparkle brightly after dusk. It’s fitting, then, that the local town’s called Aurora. The town's a quiet spot with a restaurant or two, just over 15 minutes' drive away; if you'll be on braai duty back at base, pick up food enroute to the park from a larger settlement like Velddrif by the coast (50 minutes) or Piketberg, 45 minutes inland. Arrived with all your essentials in tow? Then it’s time to get out on the hilly, rock-lined hiking and cycling paths scattered across the grounds and leading towards dams for wild swims and crags covered in ancient Bushman art. The site also has a toilet block heated by solar power with running water and flushing toilets. Campfires are allowed, so you can keep cosy while lying back and watching the stars come out after dark.

Local attractions

The beauty of this site? It’s in the middle of nature with tons of wildlife to explore. Set off on ambles around the rocky scenery, making sure to tear your eyes away from the views of Table Mountain in the distance (visible on clear days) and towards the sky for the birdlife that’s regularly seen in the area – there are well over 100 species flitting about. Further afield towards the coast is the fishing town of Velddrif (50 minutes’ drive) for beach times and boat trips along the Bergrivier; St Helena Bay, meanwhile, is a bit further along (an hour and 10 minutes) for sunbathing sessions on white-sand beaches. Heading into the hinterlands away from the coast lands you in Piketberg, where there are wineries to taste-test a selection of South African vino. Try Winkelshoek Wynkelders, Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate or Nieuwedrift Wine Estate, all around 45 minutes away.
