  • Family-friendly site 25 minutes’ walk from Hoge Veluwe National Park
  • A 40-minute walk to Kröller-Müller Museum; Arnhem 25 minutes’ drive
  • Indoor pool, bike or go-kart rental, shop and lake on site
With towering trees and ducks on the lake, EuroParcs De Zanding has mastered the art of a relaxing, wildlife-oriented getaway. Family-friendly stays at this wildlife haven might begin with a morning stroll around the water’s edge and rummaging for snacks and sandwich ingredients in the mini market, followed by mounting your (traditionally white) rental bicycle and pedalling out into the surrounding nature reserves – picnic in tow, of course. Where to? Perhaps stop by the Veluwe village of Otterlo (20 minutes’ walk or five minutes’ bike ride), where there are cute cafés, a gastropub, museum and restaurants for more tasty bites and vast nature reserves on all sides. Or make a beeline for the moors and Veluwe forests in the Hoge Veluwe National Park (from 25 minutes’ walk or five minutes’ bike ride). The park’s Kröller-Müller Museum (10 minutes’ drive or 40 minutes’ walk) has the second-largest Van Gogh collection on the globe for those who’d like a glimpse of his artistic genius. Back at base, wifi will help you keep in touch with friends back home (just try not to make them too envious with snaps of the lake). There’s also a snack bar, takeaway and restaurant if your tummy’s ready to be fed again. Otherwise, keeping things fast paced is simple, as the site has go-kart rental, a playground, sports field, indoor pool and natural swimming pool. Any families who have kids to keep fully entertained will also be happy to find things like zoos, museums and theme parks scattered around the Apeldoorn (half an hour) and Arnhem (25 minutes) areas too.

Liked: Detta var en helt fantastisk vistelse. Boendet var mycket mysigt och området likaså. Det var mycket närma att gå in till den mysa byn för resturanger och affärer. Vi kommer väldigt gärna tillbaka.

Local attractions

Bundle everyone in the car and head over to the city of Arnhem (25 minutes’ drive), where there are vintage trinkets and boutique finds up for grabs, as well as a whole host of other activities… grab a bite to eat along the scenic Rijnkade (25 minutes), pack a picnic for pretty Park Sonsbeek (20 minutes) or pick from the city's museums. These include the Netherlands Open Air Museum (20 minutes), which recreates life in Holland over the years, and the war-themed Arnhems Oorlogsmuseum (10 minutes). Of course, there’s Burgers' Zoo (20 minutes) too, with its rainforest, desert and underwater settings. Introducing Apeldoorn (half an hour) too… pretend like you’re royalty at Paleis Het Loo (half an hour), witness the free-roaming monkeys at Apenheul (25 minutes) or tick off the theme park thrills at Julianatoren Apeldoorn (half an hour). A slightly different landscape for hiking, biking or horse riding? Try the amazing shifting sand dunes at Kootwijkerzand (20 minutes). While you’re there, Radio Kootwijk (half an hour) is only a little further on, and a dramatic abandoned piece of architecture that was an early radio station.
