  • Well-equipped Gelderland park on the banks of the IJssel in Olburgen
  • Close to National Park de Hoge Veluwe; half-hour drive to Arnhem
  • Lake beach, fishing, outdoor pool, restaurant and watersports on site
What a great spot for a Gelderland holiday – Olburgen site EuroParcs Marina Strandbad is on the banks of the IJssel and close to two fabulous natural areas in the National Park de Veluwezoom and National Park de Hoge Veluwe (the largest national park in the Netherlands). How you choose to explore the area is completely up to you: there are lots of walking trails to follow, or you might like to pedal your way along the popular 8 Castles cycling route (bikes and e-choppers can be hired on site if you don’t have your own). There’s also the option of bringing along a boat or hiring canoes or paddleboards on site to head out onto the water directly from the park. Fancy a change of scenery? There are plenty of towns and cities to wander around nearby: Deventer, Bronkhorst and Zutphen are within easy reach and you can drive to Arnhem in a little over half an hour. Of course, you don’t actually need to leave the park to find things to do: the site has a heated outdoor pool, a lake beach, a wellness centre with spa and gym, a fishing area and various games including volleyball and table tennis. Playground kit is scattered around the site and in the summer there’s also a range of activities that kids can get stuck into. All the essentials are sorted here too: the park has a laundry, a mini market and a snack bar/takeaway, along with an Italian restaurant with a lovely terrace that’s just the place for drinks or relaxed meals.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Cycle path runs through the site so easy access to routes. On site restaurant was good.

Disliked: We were in the 'circle' of pitches next to the Marina, which have no view of marina or the lake, which was disappointing. Shower/Toilet block ok but not many units so at busy parts of the season this could be an issue.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The location and the cycle tracks.

Disliked: This was most disappointing. The area for tourers was not at all flat - it’s an area of grass with a steep incline down a concrete ramp and it was clear from the surface of the ramp that many vehicles has bottomed out on it. When we arrived there was no information regarding fresh water, waste water or chemical toilet facilities. The pitches were not marked out, or even numbered, so we had no idea where we were supposed to set up. The only way we could level our motorhome (even with ramps) was by moving to an area that was too far away from the electric supply for our 25m cable, so we paid for power that we couldn’t use. The only toilet facilities are shared with users of the marina. It is not worth the €31 for the night we stayed - use the stellplatz a few hundred yards up the waterway. That looked over the water (unlike our pitch), had power and facilities and was much cheaper. This is obviously a premium development but the touring facilities are an after-thought and need extensive upgrading to warrant the fee.

Local attractions

You can spend a lot of time around here just pottering about on the water or taking walks in the national parks. A favourite spot for the latter is the Posbank (25 minutes’ drive) – the highest local point has some great views and lovely walking trails for taking in the scenery. If you’d like to mix in a few different days out though, you’ll have plenty of options. How about animal spotting at Burgers’ Zoo (half an hour) or Apenheul (45 minutes), or perhaps taking the kids for a magical visit to Het Land van Jan Klaassen (25 minutes)? Meanwhile, those who prefer a cultural tinge to their days out can head to Vorden Castle (25 minutes) or the fabulous Kröller-Müller Museum (45 minutes), which holds the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Bronkhorst (10 minutes), Zutphen (25 minutes) and Arnhem (half an hour) are all worth a visit for city wanderings, and you may like to take a step back to a different era on a journey with the Veluwsche Steam Train Company (35 minutes).
