If you’ve got someone in your travelling party – your kids, your partner, maybe even yourself – who’s fascinated by flight, then here’s a bit of a treat for you. At Aero Club Skopje you’ll be staying right there by the airfield, so you’ll be in the midst of the action whenever there’s someone taking off or landing. Of course, this is a small private airfield rather than a huge international airport, so there won’t be constant aircraft movement at all hours. In fact, it’s a pretty peaceful place most of the time, with space to relax and lovely views up towards the surrounding mountains. It’s a safe and secure place too, with CCTV and security guards on site 24 hours a day. This is a small campground rather than a fully fledged holiday park, but it’s still got all the essential facilities covered – guests have access to a wifi connection, charging facilities and a shared fridge and freezer. There’s also a smart bathroom block with separate men’s and ladies’ toilets and showers and accessible facilities. A café on site sells drinks and snacks, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals too. Take a look up at the mountains around you and it’s probably hard to believe that you’re only about five miles from the centre of the capital city Skopje. It’s true though – and the presence of both city and countryside close by means you can have a fabulously varied break here, taking the 15-minute drive to the city one day and heading out for a hike the next without any long journeys.

Powered gravel and cement/asphalt campsite

Liked: The caretaker welcomed us kindly And was very helpful we had a great spot for our caravan and felt very safe due to the five lovely guard dogs that guarded our caravan

Local attractions

You’ll want to spend some time in Skopje, of course. It should take about 15 minutes to drive into the city centre, where you can learn about the country’s history at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, visit the Skopje Fortress and see the Memorial House of Mother Teresa. It’s also worth taking time to visit the old bazaar and stroll through the city streets looking out for the collection of huge statues (Alexander the Great being the most prominent). A little way out of the city are some great hiking trails, including those that take you up Mount Vodno (40 minutes’ drive), where one of the world’s largest crucifixes sits at the top (you can also ride up on the bus or cable car if you prefer). Matka Canyon (20 minutes) is another gorgeous spot to visit close by – you can hike, fish or go kayaking here, and there are also some excellent boat tours that will whisk you across the lake’s bright green waters to a cave full of stalactites.
