  • Furnished rental tents at a spacious site a kilometre from Nommern
  • Direct access to forest trails; several castles within 10 mins' drive
  • Indoor/outdoor swimming pool, restaurant and kids' activities
Now here's a splendid spot for a Luxembourg outdoor break – Country Camp at Nommerlayen is about a kilometre south of the village of Nommern, and it's surrounded by spectacular scenery of forests, rivers and intriguing sandstone formations. You’ll definitely want to have your walking boots and/or your mountain bikes with you when you stay here, as a whole network of walking trails spreads out from the site to help you explore the local area, with mountain bike trails running past too. Not sure you’ll find your way? Head to reception, which has a good stack of tourist info, including ideas for walks and other outdoor activities. The walks are excellent, yes – but in fact you won't even have to leave the site to start soaking up the scenery, as there are some lovely views up to the hills from right here by your tent. And the tents themselves are rather nice too: sturdy canvas structures that are ready to move into, and kitted out with lots of handy features including beds, bed linen, a kitchen area and indoor/outdoor furniture. Clean and spacious shared bathrooms are close by. This is a friendly site with an international character, and it’s a sociable place too – kids often find they quickly make new friends at the kids’ club or in the play area (handily located so that parents can keep an eye on them from their tent). There’s also a swimming pool on site, with a retractable roof to make sure you can keep swimming in all weathers, and a restaurant and well-stocked food shop should ensure everyone stays happily fed throughout their stay.

Local attractions

Ask on site for details of the best walking and bike trails around – these will take you out across the plains and into the forests, past intriguing rock formations and caves. When it's time to give your legs a rest, head to Grevenmacher (half an hour’s drive) for a boat trip along the waters of the Moselle river. If you like to visit a historic building or few on holiday, you're in the right place – Larochette Castle, Pettingen Castle and Berg Castle are all about 10 minutes' drive away. You could also try the National Museum of Military History (MNHM) and General Patton Museum (both 15 minutes) for a different slice of history. In truth, of course, Luxembourg is pretty small, so it's easy enough to get to most places you’d like to go – top locations like Vianden, Echternach and Luxembourg City are all within half an hour's drive. And don’t forget that public transport across the whole country is free as well…
