  • Luxembourg half an hour’s drive; Trier 50 minutes
  • Swimming pool; playground and games room; restaurant; launderette
On a wooded plateau overlooking the town of Larochette (five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk), Country Camp at Auf Kengert is well positioned – right in the heart of Luxembourg – to explore this small, mountainous country. How mountainous, you ask? Well, the site sits on the edge of a region called Little Switzerland, so visitors should expect forests, rock walls and waterfalls – in short, many of the elements that make for a top hiking holiday. If you’re here to relax rather than to scramble up hills with your dog (a welcome guest, but only in low season) or tackling the demanding mountain-biking trail that starts in Larochette, you can choose between lounging poolside, sampling the local cuisine at the restaurant (with a roaring fireplace for cooler evenings); or relaxing with a glass of Crémant while taking in the green landscape from the restaurant terrace. Large rental tents come with a sheltered porch and garden furniture so you can sit in the shade – perhaps keeping an eye on the kids as they ride their bicycles and chase each other around on the large field. Other child-friendly zones include a well-equipped outdoor playground with an adventure course and a miniature zipwire, an indoor play area and a games room. In terms of amenities, Auf Kengert is no slouch, with a toilet block (including facilities for disabled guests), showers, and a launderette with dryers. There’s a well-stocked food shop, too – plus a supermarket (and a handful of restaurants) in Larochette.

Local attractions

Although the 15th-century Berg Castle (15 minutes’ drive) is not open to the public, you can admire the architecture from the outside and check the top of the tower for the flag that indicates if the Grand Duke of Luxembourg (whose residence this is) is in. Or you can have a meal at one of the restaurants in Château de Bourglinster (20 minutes), parts of which date from the 13th century. In Luxembourg (half an hour), the Bock Casemates are an 18th-century system of defences carved out of the rock. For something completely different, check out the contemporary offerings at the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art, or catch a performance at the Rotondes cultural centre. Public transport in Luxembourg is free, so you can just jump on and off a bus and explore in comfort. Step across the border into Germany and visit Trier (50 minutes), an ancient Roman city on the banks of the Moselle. After admiring the archaeological collections at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, take the weight off your feet for a spot of people-watching at one of the cafés lining the central Hauptmarkt square.
