  • Simple dog-friendly site in Saulkrasti, on the Gulf of Riga
  • Munchausen Museum 15 minutes’ drive; Riga one hour
  • A 10-minute walk from sandy Saulkrasti beach; nearby tennis courts
Looking for a seaside break – perhaps somewhere a little away off the usual tourist trail? Time to consider a holiday in Saulkrasti, a resort on Latvia's Baltic Sea coast. On the eastern fringes of the town, Womocamp Saulkrasti is a great budget option with a range of accommodations. Active types might appreciate the proximity to a tennis club with clay courts. However, the best thing about the site is that you’re only a 10-minute walk from Saulkrasti beach, a long expanse of sand facing the Gulf of Riga and backed by a pine grove. This place is all about de-stressing, so rent a sun lounger and an umbrella, and chill while the kids tire themselves out in the playground. If (like the children) you have energy to burn, you can rent watersport equipment (including paddleboards) and hit the water; those who find the temperatures of the Baltic Sea a little too chilly can walk the length of the beach all the way to the 18-metre high White Dune, from the top of which you can take in views of the coast and the mouth of the Inčupe river – not to mention spectacular sunsets. At the end of a long day at the beach, you can stock up on provisions in the supermarkets in town (five minutes’ drive or a 10-minute walk) before heading back to base to light up the barbecue. Amenities at this dog-friendly site include showers and a toilet block.

Local attractions

The exhibits at Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum (five minutes’ drive) give an insight into the development of this beloved mode of transport. Highlights of the collection include a 19th-century penny-farthing and a wooden bicycle crafted by a Latvian aeroplane designer. Curious to learn more about the real nobleman who inspired the fictional Baron Munchausen? Displays at the Munchausen Museum (15 minutes) illustrate some of the most daring adventures of this colourful character; there’s also an art collection and a wax museum, plus a gigantic beer mug and a playground with a pirate ship. The Latvian capital Riga (one hour) is a lively university city. Its historic centre (recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site) features an interesting mix of architectural styles, from medieval structures to elegant Art Nouveau buildings, especially along the street known as Alberta Iela.
